1.6 billion people depend on rainforests for their welfare and livelihoods. 350 million of them live in rainforest communities
The people of Cutivireni, in the heart of the Amazon are among the many rainforest communities who are leading the way in the fight against climate change. They live in the Ashaninka region of Peru where rainforest is constantly under threat from deforestation. But through working in partnership with Cool Earth and with the support of Ovo Energy customers, this community can continue living in harmony with the forest, combating illegal logging and acting as the custodians of this precious and biodiverse environment.
In the area of rainforest that Ovo customers are collectively protecting, a rainforest fish farm is to be built that will be run by local children and their school teachers - to provide them nourishment while they are at school. Children in the area will also have access to new text books, learning aids and craft materials. Some of the school children walk up to 15 miles to get to school, dwellings are scattered far and wide in the rainforest with communities often many miles apart. However there's always enough energy for a game of football which all the children play in bare feet.
By safeguarding this environment we are not only helping to protect the ancient cultures and traditions of the indigenous people who have lived there for centuries but we are also maintaining a vital resource for the benefit of the global community.
As a thank you to our customers, Cool Earth have a little message to share with you. Watch the video here.
