The best way to avoid price hikes? Make sure you’re on a fixed rate plan for at least a year. This means you’ll be charged a fixed ‘unit rate’ throughout your contract, so no matter how high electricity and gas prices go, you’ll have a little protective bubble around you. We offer a popular two year fixed plan that also gives you Interest Rewards on credit balances. They start at 3% in year 1, and grow to 4% in year 2, and 5% in year 3 – a great incentive to watch your energy use and stay in credit.
Whether you’re a serial switcher, or have been with the same supplier a while, it pays to shop around. Just beware of headline price drops. We campaign against suppliers who entice new customers in with ‘teaser rates’ that are subsidised by loyal (and often vulnerable) customers on expensive ‘standard variable rate’ tariffs. It’s always worth investigating the ethics of the supplier you’re interested in.

If you want to go a bit further, our My Energy Breakdown tool on our online account management system, My OVO, will reveal a breakdown of exactly which appliances are eating up your energy – proving to you once and for all that switching the TV off at the wall really can lower your bills.
Yes, some alleged ‘energy-saving tips’ can sometimes appear to be an insult to our intelligence – but when you take pains to turn appliances off at the wall, avoid charging phones overnight, take shorter showers, and only boil the water you need in the kettle, you’ll notice a difference. Things like insulating your loft, putting up thicker curtains in winter and buying energy efficient shower heads will help too – but see here for a full list of 120 energy-saving ideas.
