Making the grid greener, with home energy storage
Our revolutionary home battery trial, exclusive to limited households
We’re no longer taking new participants for our trial as we’re moving to the next exciting phase: gathering handy insights. We can’t wait to share them with you!
Why we’re trialling battery storage...
We’re greening up the grid
Batteries can store renewable energy to be used later by homes – or the grid – when it’s needed most.
We’re trimming money off energy bills
Home batteries can offer savings of up to £90 a year1 because they help homeowners use more of their own energy.
We’re making green tech mainstream
As the first to use this planet-loving technology, the members in our trial are helping shape the future of home batteries.
Why we’re running our battery storage trial (and how it works)
A greener energy system. A world where even more of your electricity is generated at home – via that burning ball in the sky. This is the future we want. And with the help of battery technology we’re heading there, fast.
During the trial we’ll monitor how well batteries power homes across the country, with stored solar energy. We’ll also look at whether there’s extra energy left over, which can support the grid at peak times. It’s pioneering stuff.
Home battery storage between October and March
In the colder months, when energy is most needed, we’ll send the extra energy stored in the batteries back to the grid.
During this time, we might top up the solar energy stored in the batteries, with energy from the national grid. Just to make sure there’s enough to support the local network.

Home battery storage between April and September
During these sunny months, the batteries will mostly just do their thing – powering homes and storing energy from solar panels for grey days.
Occasionally we might run little tests to find other ways that the batteries can support the grid. But these won’t affect energy use day to day.

Powervault is a British company, headquartered in London. It designs and manufactures smart energy storage systems for the home, which store free solar energy and cheap electricity from the grid to reduce household energy bills and increase energy efficiency. For more information check out https://www.powervault.co.uk
It is 100cm (w) x 97cm (h) x 25cm (d).
The battery can only be installed indoors.
A Powervault system can be typically installed in a single visit, although this will depend on each property. The Certified Installer will be able to confirm how long the install will take after they have completed a survey.
Unfortunately not, as the trial is currently only available on a single rate tariff.
No – your FiT payments won’t be affected
The Powervault battery comes with a market-leading warranty of 10 years, and Powervault will either repair the defective product without charge for parts and labour, or will provide a replacement in exchange for the defective product. You can find more warranty information here: http://www.powervault.co.uk/technical/warranty/
If you’re planning on moving home, give us a call on 0330 102 7423 and we’ll look into possible options. We might be able to remove your battery and look to re-install at your new property once it’s on supply with OVO.
The battery is yours to keep, for free.
If you leave OVO within the two year trial period, we’ll arrange to come and remove the battery. After the two year trial period, you’re free to leave OVO and your battery will continue to function as normal.
The Powervault customer portal provides customers with a platform from which to monitor their energy use and optimise their charging schedules. Customers can access information about the present and historical performance of their system and use the smart tariff controller on the portal to optimise the charging of their battery against ‘smart’ time-of-day tariffs.
Important information
1Savings based on the estimated annual savings for a customer with an annual electricity usage of 5,000 kWh, 5kWp rooftop PV and a 4.1 kWh/3.3kW Powervault battery. Some battery capacity will be used for supporting the local grid. Comparison made against the same user without a battery. Savings are an estimate only and your actual costs will vary according to your region and usage.
