OVO Energy wins 'Sustainable Business of the Year' award
23 May 2011 | Ovo Energy
OVO Energy was presented with the Sustainable Business of the Year Award at the first annual Cirencester Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Ceremony. The ceremony, held at the Royal Agricultural College on Friday 20th May, honoured Cirencester businesses and their commitment to investing in the local community.
Having launched in 2009, OVO Energy was recognised as an environmentally responsible and socially engaged company. OVO Energy is a national gas and electricity supplier based in the outskirts of Cirencester, offering two simple tariffs that give consumers the opportunity to be green, without the premium. The New Energy tariff offers 15% renewable electricity, more than double the amount of the industry standard, while the Green Energy tariff offers 100% renewable electricity.
In 2010, OVO announced their partnership with environmental charity, Cool Earth, with a commitment to protect an acre of rainforest on behalf of each customer.
Managing Director Stephen Fitzpatrick said, “When it comes to long term sustainability, we believe it’s better to encourage more to do a little rather than rely on a few to do a lot. That’s why we thought there must be a way we can help our customers do their bit for the environment, and together, we can make a big difference. We have implemented the biggest global initiative in the industry to fight global warming. The average household emits 5.5 tonnes of C02 every year. By protecting an acre of rainforest, each customer is locking in 260 tonnes of C02. Together we’re protecting nearly 40,000 acres of rainforest.”
He continued, “I would like to thank the Chamber of Commerce for presenting us with this award and extend a big thank you to our team for their dedication and hard work.”
