The journey starts here
We launched in 2009 with a simple goal – to make energy better. Ten years on, our goals have got a little bigger.
Together, we’re releasing more carbon into our atmosphere than ever. And that carbon is heating up our planet 10 times faster than the usual rate, speeding up the climate crisis.
A big part of our collective carbon footprint is made up of the energy we use in the home (a whopping 26% on average3), and we each need to take responsibility for this.
So today, we’re starting our journey to help OVO members reduce their home energy emissions to net zero. Not as customers buying energy, but as members with a common goal.
Ready to aim for zero? Meet the Carbon Tracker
We’ve teamed up with the Carbon Trust to create the Carbon Tracker, an online tool to help you understand your carbon emissions and learn how to start reducing them.
Starting with your home energy and transport emissions, it reveals your carbon impact and sets you a carbon target. It also gives you personalised suggestions to support you as you start to lighten your footprint.
Oh, and it’s worth mentioning that the Carbon Tracker is free to use for all OVO members, new and old. Win.
Ready to go further? Meet OVO BeyondBETA
The Carbon Tracker is just the beginning. We want to empower members to take the fight against the climate crisis to the next level. And that’s where our OVO BeyondBETA upgrade comes in - giving you the green energy and technology you need to kick the carbon.
Here’s how it works:
And all this can help you cut your carbon by a whopping net 4.2 tonnes a year4. That’s like saving 12.63m2 of Arctic sea ice from disappearing. Which is pretty big. Now look what could happen if we all sign up to OVO Beyond…
(See below to find out how we worked this out)

We’re also practising what we preach by pledging to make our business achieve net zero operations by 2030 – but more on that soon.
This is just the beginning of our journey to zero carbon. From today, there’ll be new products and features coming thick and fast to help members lower their carbon footprints.
So stay tuned. The fight is on.
In 2016 a group of clever scientists worked out that for each tonne of CO2 released, 3 square meters of the sea ice that covers the Arctic in the summer melts, thanks to the higher temperatures. You can read that study here. Since we know that OVO BeyondBETA helps each member save 4.2tonnes of carbon per year, we multiplied the 3m2 of sea ice that melts per tonne of carbon emissions by 4.2 to see how much sea ice cover would have been melted if those emissions had occurred. That gave us the 12.63m2 per person - which we then multiplied first by 10, then by 100 - and finally by 27.6mm, the latest figure for UK households from the Office of National Statistics.
1. By providing 100% renewable electricity and offsetting all associated lifecycle carbon emissions involved in the production and consumption of your electricity, OVO BeyondBETA reduces your yearly carbon emissions from the electricity used in your home to net zero. We buy 100% of your energy from renewable sources such as wind, solar and hydro. And we do this via renewable certificates (Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin certificates (REGOs)). See here for details on Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin certificates and how these work. We also offset the remaining lifecycle carbon emissions from the production of the renewable electricity you use by supporting UN-led REDD+ carbon reduction projects that are certified to the Verified Carbon Standard.
2. If you’re on OVO BeyondBETA, we buy 100% carbon-neutral gas for you. This is made up of 15% green gas - and we offset the remaining carbon emissions from the production and consumption of the gas you use. This reduces your yearly carbon emissions from the gas used in your home to net zero.
We buy our green gas via renewable certificates (Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs)). See here for details on Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin and how these work.
We offset your emissions by supporting UN-led REDD+ carbon reduction projects that are certified to the Verified Carbon Standard.
3. This is an average and excludes emissions outside your direct control, such as schools, institutions and government bodies.
4. This calculation is based on the assumption that every metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent shrinks the ice cover by 32 square feet (source). OVO BeyondBETA can reduce your net carbon emissions from energy use by 4.2 tonnes of CO2e per year compared to the UK grid average (Based on the average OVO Members' energy use in a year). OVO BeyondBETA is made up of 100% renewable electricity and 100% carbon neutral gas (15% green gas and we offset the remaining emissions). To measure this impact, we compare the carbon emissions you have with OVO Beyond to the carbon emissions you'd have if you were with a supplier that had the UK grid average fuel mix. The Carbon Trust helped us to calculate the emissions from OVO BeyondBETA and the UK grid average.
