Charge Anytime: questions and answers
Smart charging is when you charge your EV at home. The smart bit comes from our intelligent tech making sure your vehicle is charged when the grid is greenest, within the time you need it charged by. You set this time through the app.
Smart charging with Charge Anytime unlocks the cheaper charging rate of 10p per kWh. It helps move the UK energy system towards a smarter, greener way of using energy. If more people use energy when the grid is greener, together we can rely less on fossil fuels to keep power flowing at peak times.
If you’re switching to OVO and would like to add Charge Anytime to your plan, you’ll need to wait until your energy supply and online account is fully set up. This could take up to 4 to 6 weeks.
Once you’re all set up, head over to the Offers section in your online account and select Charge Anytime.
At the end of the month, we work out how much energy you've used to smart charge your EV. We'll use this info to credit your account in the first week of the following month. So that your smart charging rate reflects our 10p per kWh rate.
For example:
The Charge Anytime rate is 10p a kWh. And let's say your standard electricity rate is 30p a kWh.
We'll credit you 20p for each kWh you've used to smart charge your EV. To make your rate 10p.
That means if you spend 100 hours smart charging your EV, you'll get £20 in credit back on your bill.
It’ll appear on your monthly OVO energy bill under the heading ‘Charge Anytime Credit’. We apply this credit to your account in the first week of every month.
The credit shown on your bill will be for the electricity you’ve used for smart charging your EV the previous month. So, in the first week of September, we’ll apply your credit for August, and so on.
You can override your smart charging schedule at any time. This will let you top-up quickly when you need to, at your standard home electricity rate.
The next time you charge, you’ll automatically go back to your smart charging schedule.
At the moment, the only way we can work out charging with solar panels is if you have an Indra Smart Pro Charger.5 We install these chargers, so they come compatible with Charge Anytime.
Charge Anytime only tells us how much electricity you’ve used from the grid. So if your home has solar panels it’s harder to work this out – because some of the electricity may come from your solar panels, and some from the grid.
But we’re looking into how solar panels could work with Charge Anytime. So if you’d like to take part in our research, please email [email protected]. We want to get Charge Anytime to as many people as possible!

- The 3p a mile claim is based on an EV customer driving the UK average of 7,000 miles at an average of 4 miles a kWh. The Charge Anytime add-on rate on 29/09/23 is 10p a kWh. Actual sum per mile is 2.5p. Individual costs will vary based on your vehicle efficiency and driving style.
- The 10p per kWh rate is effective whenever you smart charge your EV. If you'd like to override your smart charging schedule to top up quickly, you'll be charged at your standard home energy electricity rate. The next time you charge, you’ll automatically go back to your smart charging schedule.
- This saving claim has been calculated by comparing the 'Tesla Model 3 Standard Range RWD: 145 - 305 miles' doing the UK average of 7000 miles with Charge Anytime with a smart charging rate of 10p per kWh versus the 'BMW 3 Series with a 820 Mile Range and 13 Gallon Tank' doing 7000 miles using petrol where the price per litre is £1.48. The 'Tesla Model 3 Standard Range RWD: 145 - 305 miles' equates to 2.56p per mile. Whilst the 'BMW 3 Series 820 Mile Range, 13 Gallon Tank' equates to 10.70 per mile. Resulting in a 76.1% difference.
- Our smart tech aims to charge your car when the grid has more renewable energy in it, within the time you’ve set. Meaning it’s less likely your EV will be charged by energy from fossil fuels.
- Please note, if you have an Indra charger, you'll lose the lock functionality when you add Charge Anytime. We're working with Indra to make the lock function compatible by early next year.
