Here’s how to earn a £50 Gift Card every time you refer a friend to OVO, with step-by-step instructions on how to start. And remember! There's no limit to referrals – so start sharing the fun today!

How does it all work? Step-by-step instructions to refer a friend to OVO

It couldn’t be easier to refer your friends and family to OVO:

  1. Click on the Refer a friend link to register and enter your name and email address. You can also find this in My OVO.
  1. You’ll receive an email from us letting you know your registration was successful. 
  1. Then choose how you’d like to share the offer with your friends. You can do this via various social media methods, like Facebook, Whatsapp or Messenger. The “unique link” option, allows you to copy and paste the link and send it however you like, to whoever you choose.

  1. Your friend can sign up online or over the phone – just remember to tell your friend to mention your name when they sign up! 
  1. Once your friend signs up to OVO, you’ll both receive an email with a link to choose your £50 Gift Card.
  2. Then all you have to do is click through and choose which Gift Card you’d like to receive.

How will you and your friend get your OVO referral £50 Gift Card?

After you’ve registered on Refer a friend, your friend will receive a referral link from OVO.

Who can I refer to OVO?

Happily, you can refer as many people as you like. There’s no limit to the number of friends and family you can invite – your friends are our friends, the more the merrier! The only reasons they won’t be eligible for a Gift Card are if:

  • They didn't mention your name when they signed up
  • They're already an OVO member
  • The property they're moving into is already supplied by OVO
  • They’ve been an OVO member in the last 12 months

How do I use my Refer A Friend Gift Card?

The M&S, John Lewis & Partners, Sainsbury’s, Halfords, B&Q or Gift Cards9 are all redeemed slightly differently. So pick a retailer below, and find out how to spend your moolah! 

Got an M&S Gift Card?

To use your eGift card in store, simply print it out and present it at the till – you don’t need the PIN. 

To spend your eGift Card online, enter the 16-digit card number at the checkout, selecting the gift card option at payment. You’ll also need to enter your PIN, which is found on the card.

Got a John Lewis & Partners Gift Card?

You can spend your eGift Card online at or Just select “use Gift Card or e-Gift Cards” on the payment page, then enter the 19 digit number and PIN, which are printed on the card.

To spend in store at John Lewis, simply present the downloaded eGift Card on your phone or bring along your print-out. Waitrose stores only accept printed eGift Cards.

Got a Sainsbury’s Gift Card?

To use your Sainsbury’s e-Gift Card in store, you can redeem it directly from your smartphone or print it out and take it into store10

To spend your eGift Card online, go to where it can be used for Sainsbury’s Online Groceries11. To use the eGift Card, it must first be converted into an online coupon12

Got a Halfords Gift Card?

You can use your e-gift card online, in store and/or in our garages. For in-store purchases, present your e-gift card either on your smartphone, or show a print-out to the cashier at the till. To spend your e-gift card online, add the e-gift card code to the Gift Card option in the online checkout, under the Billing section. You can check your Gift Card balance here

Got a B&Q Gift Card?

To spend your e-gift card in store, the barcode can be scanned from your mobile device, or the operator can enter the card number. You can also bring a print-out to the store. You don’t need your PIN. For online purchases, please enter your e-Gift code when prompted. 

Got an Gift Card?

You can only spend this card online – you can’t use it in any shops or over the phone. Here’s what to do:

  1. Go to
  2. Click on the ‘Enter your code’ button.
  3. Sign in to – or set up a new account if you don’t have one already (it’s very quick and easy).
  4. Once you’ve signed in, go to the ‘Payment & GC’ section.
  5. Click on ‘Apply a Gift Card to your account’.
  6. Enter your claim code and click ‘Apply to your account’.

Once you’ve followed these steps, the money sits in your account until you spend it. If you don’t spend it all on your first visit, the balance will be kept in your account for your next shop.

If your Gift Card doesn’t cover the total balance of everything you’re buying, you just pay the rest using a debit or credit card. If you’ve signed up for ‘One-click’ shopping, it will automatically take the rest of the money from the debit or credit card you’ve already registered.

I’ve referred someone. How do I know whether I’ll get a reward?

Mention Me (the company helping us run the Refer a Friend scheme) will tell you the good news by email. So look out for an email from [email protected].

You can also keep track of your referrals on your Refer a Friend dashboard in My OVO.

Why has my friend got their reward and I haven’t?

We send your reward by email, so make sure to check your junk or spam folder – it may have gone in there.

I referred a friend and they signed up. So why haven’t I heard from you?

We'll send your Refer a Friend reward as soon as we're supplying your friend's energy. That can take up to around 30 days from the day they sign. 

Thanks for your patience. Look out for an email from when your friend signed up – it'll include all the details on what's happening next with your referral.

10  Product exclusions apply. After each use, any remaining balance on the e-Gift Card will be printed on a receipt. It is the recipient's responsibility to keep the receipt as proof of their outstanding balance. There is no limit to the number of e-Gift Cards that can be used per transaction, but e-Gift Cards cannot exceed a total of £250 per transaction. If items are returned to the store in accordance with our refund policy any refund due will be credited to your eGift Card.

If a valid card number and PIN has been used, you will be asked to manually enter how much you wish to convert. If you convert only part of your eGift Card balance, you will be asked to provide your valid card number and PIN on any future conversions. Once converted, your outstanding balance will be held online and can be found in your coupon wallet at checkout. Your online coupon held in your coupon wallet will expire 24 months after first conversion.
