OVO commits to plant 1m trees in continued dedication to help cut carbon
24 November 2021
London, Monday 8th November 2021: OVO has announced its commitment to planting one million trees in the next year throughout the UK in its continued dedication to restore nature and creating green spaces in communities.
OVO’s Director of Sustainability, Dr Rebecca Heaton, announced this pledge at COP26 Glasgow as part of DEFRA’s Get Nature Positive campaign of which OVO is a founding member. Trees play a vital role in helping the UK reach its 2050 net zero goal by providing a natural ecosystem to absorb carbon, while also providing a home for wildlife and enhancing biodiversity.
OVO will work with its partners at The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) and the Woodland Trust, who will issue tree planting packs to volunteering groups across Britain to plant in publicly accessible green spaces and schools.
Earlier this year OVO, and other British businesses, called on Lord Goldsmith to support a legally binding tree target. The government’s current target is to plant at least 30,000 hectares of trees across the UK per year by 2025, totalling about 1.5 billion trees by 2050; binding this in law reinforces political commitment to ensuring it's met. The petition surpassed 10,000 signatures in a matter of months.
Additionally, OVO Foundation, OVO’s charity arm, planted Scotland’s first Wee Forest with Earthwatch earlier this year. It forms part of a network of nature-rich green spaces across Glasgow as a living legacy and celebration of COP26.
Dr Rebecca Heaton, Director of Sustainability, OVO said:
“We know that trees are essential in storing carbon, reconnecting people with nature and helping the UK deliver on its net zero target. We hope that in committing to this goal we are demonstrating the ways in which communities and businesses alike can take the fight against climate change into their own hands.”

OVO is on a mission through its sustainability strategy Plan Zero to tackle the most important issue of our time; the climate crisis, by bringing our customers with us on the journey towards zero carbon living. OVO Energy has committed to being a net zero carbon business and achieve bold science-based carbon reduction targets by 2030, while helping members halve their carbon footprint at the same time.
OVO tree planting commitments:
- Tiny Forests: OVO Foundation works with Earthwatch Europe to fund the planting of some of the UK’s first Tiny Forests, using the Miyawaki technique. These are 600 trees planted densely in a tennis-court size plot, maximising benefits per square metre of land. Benefits for biodiversity and community engagement. A nature-rich accessible green space and outdoor classroom for people to reconnect with nature. OVO Foundation has funded 12 Tiny Forests.
- Tree-planting for our people: We plant trees for our employees, to celebrate moments on their journey with us. Plus, we organise team volunteering days with a variety of partners, like our friends at The Wildlife Trusts, so that our people can get directly involved with restoring nature.
- Supporting forest conservation through carbon offsetting projects: We support projects in Guatemala and Uganda that conserve and protect tropical forests, to avoid carbon emissions.
- Our advocacy work and campaigns on tree-planting: We ran a campaign last year to call on the government for a legally binding UK tree-planting target. We mobilised our members and the public to show their support for tree-planting, and our desire for the government to provide policy certainty to businesses who want to invest in nature in the UK.
