Making the grid greener, with home energy storage

Our revolutionary home battery trial, exclusive to limited households

We’re no longer taking new participants for our trial as we’re moving to the next exciting phase: gathering handy insights. We can’t wait to share them with you!

Why we’re trialling battery storage...

We’re greening up the grid

Batteries can store renewable energy to be used later by homes – or the grid – when it’s needed most.

We’re trimming money off energy bills

Home batteries can offer savings of up to £90 a year1 because they help homeowners use more of their own energy.

We’re making green tech mainstream

As the first to use this planet-loving technology, the members in our trial are helping shape the future of home batteries.

Why we’re running our battery storage trial (and how it works)

A greener energy system. A world where even more of your electricity is generated at home – via that burning ball in the sky. This is the future we want. And with the help of battery technology we’re heading there, fast.

During the trial we’ll monitor how well batteries power homes across the country, with stored solar energy. We’ll also look at whether there’s extra energy left over, which can support the grid at peak times. It’s pioneering stuff.

Home battery storage between October and March

In the colder months, when energy is most needed, we’ll send the extra energy stored in the batteries back to the grid.

During this time, we might top up the solar energy stored in the batteries, with energy from the national grid. Just to make sure there’s enough to support the local network.

Home battery storage

Home battery storage between April and September

During these sunny months, the batteries will mostly just do their thing – powering homes and storing energy from solar panels for grey days.

Occasionally we might run little tests to find other ways that the batteries can support the grid. But these won’t affect energy use day to day.
