Where do our renewables come from?

All of our plans come with 100% renewable electricity as standard – plus, one carbon-busting tree planted in your name every year1. Now, speaking of 100% renewable electricity...what does it really mean?

Where we get our electricity from

For us, supplying energy is just a part of what we do. Because when we buy electricity from the energy market, we sell it on to you.

Like most suppliers who offer green electricity, all of our renewable power is backed by Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin certificates (REGOs).

How REGOs work

REGOs are given to people who generate renewable electricity (like the owner of a wind farm). They receive one REGO for every megawatt-hour (MWh) unit of renewable electricity they put onto the National Grid.

Once we work out how many units of electricity our members have used, we buy the equivalent number of REGOs from UK-based suppliers. This way we guarantee that for every unit of renewable electricity that we sell, a unit of renewable electricity has been added to the grid.

Where our REGOs come from

We want to keep supporting renewable generation in the place where the energy is being used. So all the renewable electricity we sell in the UK is backed by UK-based certificates, under a scheme approved and run by Ofgem (the energy regulator).

And we back up the renewable electricity we sell across international markets with certificates that are locally sourced too.

Most of our REGOs come from wind farms or solar parks, others from sources like hydroelectric ones (that use water to produce electricity).

How renewables help cut your carbon footprint

By swapping to 100% renewable electricity, you can cut up to 1 tonne of carbon a year2 from your carbon footprint. Because the carbon released in the production and use of renewable electricity is much lower than gets released from the standard energy supplied through the UK’s grid (which is only 37.9% renewable).

Nearly all suppliers who offer green electricity use them. It’s a good way of proving that electricity comes from a renewable source. At the moment, REGOs are the most affordable way to guarantee renewable energy supply – making it accessible to more and more people.

At OVO, that’s something we stand by. We choose to buy REGOs so that we can offer renewable electricity to as many members as we can at the best possible price, while providing a source of income to renewable generators too.

As well as buying REGOs, we also invest in helping our members use their energy more efficiently. Which is why we’re designing products and tech that can get our energy system ready for a future where renewable energy is the norm. All of this is key in moving towards a zero carbon grid. It’s where we think we can make a big difference, together.

That’s an interesting one. Ready all about it here.

More information
1 - Each year, OVO plants 1 tree for every member in partnership with the Woodland Trust. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, so tree-planting helps to slow down climate change.

2- By switching to 100% renewable electricity with OVO Energy you could reduce your carbon footprint by up to 1 tonne of carbon per year. This is based on the carbon emissions caused in the production and consumption of the 100% renewable electricity OVO provides as standard, compared to the emissions caused by the production and consumption of UK grid average electricity. Average UK household energy consumption figures were sourced from BEIS (2019). The carbon emissions factors were calculated by the Carbon Trust.
