I have had a very mixed experience

I have had a very mixed experience. The Ovo people I have spoken too have been helpful but we still do not seem to have sorted out a problem, which was not caused by me in the first place. Ovo informed me that I was moving and they were windin up my account. This was not true. We are not moving and I had not informed Ovo of that. When I spoke to your colleague we agreed that the easiest solution to this problem was to close the account and open a new one. I did this and made clear that I wanted to clear all arrears. I was told that we had done this and set up an appropriate standing order. I then received an email saying I was significantly in arrears. I phoned up again and was told that I was not in arrears but I have received a subsequently email saying my standing order was not big enough. After all this botheration I just want to set my account up and running. Ovo has been a good provider but this whole unnecessary muddle has become a mnuisance.

Fair pricing and green energy

Green energy and simple to understand tariffs

We chose OVO as it had very easy to understand tariffs and it was very easy to switch. We have plain to read statements every month showing what we paid and what we are in credit by. I like the fact that we earn interest on the amount we are in credit by too. We are also conscious of the fact they offer a green energy option.

I love being an Ovo customer

I love being an Ovo customer nothing is too much trouble we used the smart meters they have a smooth tech system for payments. I have rung up for support about why our power went out and they directed us to the correct energy company quickly. Their customer service is fantastic.

When it came to renewal of my contract…

When it came to renewal of my contract I was given helpful advise on which contract would be most economical on the basis of the consumption evidence available. However my gas consumption has been impossible to read for over two years and bills have been based on estimates. I had to take the initiative to have a new meter installed whereas I think OVO should have done so, and done so before I had to decide on my future tariff regime. That said, the people I have dealt with have been helpful and clear, as is all the company's written material.

As far as the user is concerned what the provider has to do is to provide gas and electricity reliably and economically, providing accurate billing and with little input necessary from the customer. Generally OVO does this well.

Frequently asked boiler cover questions

Annual boiler services as part of OVO HomePlan include:

  • A visual check of the boiler
  • The boiler being fired up safely
  • A flue gas analysis efficiency test
  • Opening up the boiler to inspect it, if necessary
  • Checking the flue, ventilation, and system pressure
  • Cleaning the condensate trap
  • Visually checking the radiators, and bleeding them if necessary
  • Checking the hot water cylinder
  • Confirmation in writing that the service has been carried out

You can start making claims after your first 30 days of cover.

Good news: we cover most domestic central heating boilers that are powered by mains gas. 

We don’t cover:

  • Electric, liquid petroleum gas (LPG) boilers
  • Solid fuel or oil fuelled boilers
  • Back boilers and dual purpose boilers (e.g. similar to Aga, Rayburn)
  • Central heating and/or controls specifically designed for piped or electric underfloor systems
  • Electric central heating systems

This all depends on exactly what type of plan you choose, so check your policy documents.

If you’ve chosen one of our standard plans without a £60 fixed excess charge, then you won’t pay any excess charges except in specific circumstances. 

 For example, if you’re on our Complete plan without a £60 fixed excess charge, you will have to pay excess charges in the following circumstances: 

  • External drains callouts – £50 excess 
  • Taps and toilets callouts – £50 excess 

 If your boiler is 7 years or older at the beginning of cover you’ll also pay a £50 excess for boiler call-outs. 

 If you choose one of our policies with a fixed £60 excess, then you will be charged £60 for each callout. If the engineer has to make a second visit to fix the same problem (within 30 days of the first visit) you won’t have to pay the call-out charge again. There is no call-out charge for your annual boiler service.

We know there’s a lot of admin to think about when you move house. The good news is, it’s no hassle to take your boiler cover with you. Simply get in touch with us to let us know that you’ve moved, and we can help you set up a new contract. 

We’ll need to know:

  • Your new address
  • The date you moved in
  • Some details about your new boiler

Then we’ll send someone out to check the boiler and make sure it’s one that we can cover. 

You could also choose to end your boiler cover with us when you move. There might be a charge for this.

There’s a 14-day “cool off” period, during which you can change your mind and cancel your policy at no charge. After that, you can cancel your boiler cover at any time, but there may be a cancellation fee to pay.

In emergencies, such as a water leak, we will aim to get an engineer out to you within two hours.

For all other problems, we’ll aim to get someone to you either:

  • The same day you call, if you call before 9am
  • Within 24 hours

Our boiler services usually take place between March and October. When you sign up to one of our plans, we’ll be in touch to let you know which month you’re scheduled in for. It will usually be in the year after you’ve signed up.

The month before your service, we’ll reach out again to find out when the most convenient time and date is for you.
