Questions and answers
How much you earn from exporting your energy depends on:
How much energy you generate
What percentage of that energy you don’t use and export to the grid
Which SEG tariff you sign up to and the rate offered per kWh
Different suppliers set their own SEG rates, so payments can vary.
The readings we use for payments will be sent automatically from your smart meter 4 times a year – in March, June, September, and December. But, if for some reason they're not sent automatically, we'll ask you to send them to us.
Yes, your SEG payments and your energy supply are separate. But you’ll get paid more for exporting your electricity if we also supply your energy. Here’s how to switch to OVO or find out more about how to switch energy suppliers when you've got solar panels.
Once your solar panels (and battery, if chosen) are installed, we’ll send you an email with details on how to sign up for SEG Install Exclusive. If you sign up within 3 months, we’ll back-pay your SEG earnings from the day your panels started generating energy. You’ll need a smart meter to qualify.
First, check if the previous owners were signed up for SEG or FIT.
If they weren’t, you can sign up for SEG by choosing a tariff.
If they were on FIT, you’ll need to contact the FIT provider and complete a Change of Ownership form.
Once that’s done, you can switch to SEG or remain on FIT.
An MCS certificate verifies that your renewable energy system is eligible to export energy back to the grid under the Smart Export Guarantee scheme (SEG).
You should have received your MCS certificate in your handover pack when your system was installed (or when you bought the property).
The certificate will include an MCS installation number, which usually looks like this: ‘MCS-12345678-X’. If you can't find your certificate, please contact your installer or supplier to get a copy.
MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) is a unique identifier for your energy supply. It’s required for registering your export meter with the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).
If your meter doesn't already have one, we can help you register it.

1 SEG Beyond Exclusive is only available to customers who have their energy supply with OVO, and who are currently signed up to OVO Beyond, or join OVO Beyond within 3 months of signing up to this SEG tariff. If you don't sign up to OVO Beyond within this time we reserve the right to move you to another SEG Tariff.
2 If you buy solar panels and a battery from us, and OVO supply your energy, you'll be eligible for our anytime SEG Install Exclusive rate of 20p per kWh rate (correct at 1 April 2025). You'll need to sign up to our SEG tariff to get this rate. This SEG rate is exclusive to customers who get solar panels and battery from OVO. You’ll also need a smart meter. You will not be eligible for this rate if you are already a FiT customer. Customers who purchase solar panels only will be able to access our 15p kWh rate.
3 These annual energy savings are dependent on your property type and location, roof type, slope and size. If your roof is shaded or isn't south facing, figures are likely to be lower. We based the figure on the following:
a) You have 12 (440W) solar panels and a 9.5 kWh battery installed b) You’re home all day with an annual electricity consumption of 2,700 kWh (Ofgem). You currently pay our Standard Variable Rate of 24.50p (correct at 1 October 2024) and will use 39% of what you generate c) You sign up for our SEG Install Exclusive rate (20p kWh) when you purchase solar and a battery from us, and you sell back the remaining 61% of energy generated.
You’ll get a more accurate savings estimation once we’ve surveyed your property.
4 Beyond allows eligible customers to accrue the value of up to 5 solar panels over two years. Approximate accrual rate of the value of one solar panel per 4 month period. Redeemable when a customer purchases an OVO solar panel and battery package within the accrual period or up to three years after. Must be redeemed in one go. Value of the amount of solar panels accrued by the time of redemption will be applied as a discount to your total solar panel and battery package up to a maximum redemption value of £500. Terms and eligibility criteria apply. For more details see here.
