Power Move Flex Terms and Conditions
Terms and conditions for Power Move Flex - Power Up and Power Down Events - Summer Trial
Introduction
These terms and conditions (the Terms) apply to ‘Power Move Flex’ (Power Move Flex). Please read these Terms carefully. These Terms are in addition to, and don’t replace, our Core Energy Supply Terms and Conditions (Core Terms) or any other terms which may apply to your OVO plan and the CrowdFlex Trial Terms.
All defined terms in the Core Terms or CrowdFlex Trial Terms will have the same meaning when used in these terms unless otherwise stated.
About Power Move Flex
1.1 OVO is taking part in CrowdFlex, an OFGEM funded project, running a series of trials from May 2024 until December 2025. The trials are aimed at understanding how households can contribute to a greener electricity grid (CrowdFlex). Customers wanting to take part in CrowdFlex need to sign up to Power Move Flex.
These terms are for the 3rd trial of Power Move Flex, running from July 2025 to October 2025.
In Power Move Flex, OVO are rewarding customers for simply shifting non-essential electricity use out of times when demand is higher, or into times when demand is lower.
When you sign up to Power Move Flex, we’ll let you know what action to take and how you’ll be rewarded.
Customers who are credit customers will be participating in Power Up events (when there’s low demand on the grid) and Power Down events (when there’s high demand on the grid).
Pay As You Go (PAYG) customers will be participating in Power Down events only.
1.2 For Power Up and Power Down events, you’ll need to shift your electricity usage either into a specific time period (due to low demand) or out of a specific time period (due to high demand).
What’s the difference between a Power Up event and a Power Down event?
1.3 At peak times of the day, there are high levels of demand on the energy grid. But renewable energy sources like wind and solar power, by nature, can be unpredictable. So this demand on the grid doesn’t always match how much renewable power is being generated. And when there’s not enough to go around, dirtier, carbon-heavy fossil fuel gets used to fill the gap.
Power Move Flex helps match the demand to the power being generated. So we can make the most of the UK's renewable electricity. Events in the trial may not always be based on live grid constraints, we will be testing event times that will help us understand and manage potential future grid scenarios or demand in different seasons.
Power Up events - you’ll be asked to shift your electricity usage into this time period. Remember - this is typical day to day activities, the purpose is to not use more electricity than you usually would in total.
Power Down events - you’ll be asked to shift your electricity usage out of this time period – that means running energy intensive tasks outside of these times.
How can I join Power Move Flex?
1.4 You can join Power Move Flex if you’re an OVO customer with a smart meter that’s sending half-hourly readings and meet the Eligibility Criteria (see section 2).
We’ll be inviting customers to sign up via email from May 2025. You may also get a notification to opt in, or be auto-enrolled from one series of events to another. If you have been auto-enrolled you will have been contacted by us via email at the end of Trial 2, if you don’t wish to take part you can opt out through that email.
If you are a customer who has OVO Beyond, and are eligible for Power Move Flex, you may also be able to sign up through the offers section of OVO Beyond. How does Power Move Flex work with Power Move?
1.5 Power Move Flex is designed to reward customers for using electricity outside of peak times, when the grid is greener.
1.6 Power Move Flex is in addition to other energy flexibility schemes at OVO such as Power Move. This allows you to unlock more savings off your energy bill by shifting your electricity use either into low demand times or out of high demand times.
1.7 You’re able to sign up to Power Move Flex alongside Power Move, either taking part in both schemes or only in one. Any rewards earned from Power Move Flex will be in addition to the rewards earned in Power Move.
1.8 Power Move and Power Move Flex are separate offerings. Any bill credits earned through the trial will appear as a separate line item on your bill.
2. Eligibility
2.1 To be eligible for Power Move Flex - Power Up and Power Down events, you’ll need to meet the following criteria:
- have a communicating electricity smart meter
- your smart meter can be credit or Pay As You Go (PAYG)
- have a smart meter that is single rate (meaning you only pay a single, flat rate for your electricity) or economy-7
- opt in to half-hourly meter readings
- have an active email address
- have OVO as your energy provider
- follow with these Terms and the Core Terms
Customers with Charge Anytime are not eligible to take part in Power Up and Power Down events and can only take part in Power Move Flex for Charge Anytime.
2.2 Unfortunately there may be some types of credit and single rate smart meters that won’t work with Power Move Flex. If you have an ineligible meter you won’t be able to join.
2.3 If at any time you fail to meet the Eligibility Criteria, including no longer opting in to receive emails about Power Move Flex, email marketing consent or half-hourly meter readings, then we reserve the right to end your participation in Power Move Flex and you won’tget any Power Move Flex credit.
3. How do Power Move Flex events work?
Notification
3.1 For Power Up and Power Down events, we’ll notify you to tell you when the grid is either going to be in low or high demand (via email and/or SMS/push notification)
We’ll send you a notification to let you know a time period during a specific day (e.g. between 4pm and 5pm) when we think the grid is likely to see low or high demand.
3.2 By signing up to get Power Up and Power Down events, you’ll be automatically opted in to receive all events.
3.3 You won’t be able to opt out of a specific event, you’d have to opt out of the Power Move Flex (see Section 6). There’s no obligation for you to take part in every event, and there's no penalty for not taking part.
Opting In
3.4 To be able to earn a reward for each specific event, or have results in an event contribute to a reward target, you’ll need to opt in by tapping the opt in button on your event notification email.
3.5 You’ll need tot opt in by no later than 60 seconds before the event start time. If you opt in after the event has started, you won’t be eligible to earn rewards for that event.
The Events
3.6 For a Power Up event - if you’re able to increase your electricity usage, by shifting in any non-essential electricity, to above your normal usage, you’ll be eligible to earn a reward. The details of what rewards you can earn will be in your event notification email.
3.7 For a Power Down event - if you're able to reduce your electricity usage to below your normal usage, you’ll be eligible to earn a reward. The details of what rewards you can earn will be in your event notification email.
3.8 We are under no obligation to confirm the number of events or the value of these events in advance.
3.9 There’s no penalty for using more during a Power Down event, or using less during a Power Up event.
Event Baseline
3.10 How we measure energy shifted during an event:
Normal usage baseline -
- For working days (Mon - Fri excluding bank holidays) – your normal usage baseline is calculated using the half hourly electricity usage data taken from your smart meter over the last 10 working days before an event. You’ll need to have at least 5 working days worth of data for a target to be calculated.
- For non-working days (Saturday, Sunday & bank holidays) – your normal usage baseline is calculated using the half hourly electricity usage data taken from your smart meter over the last 4 non-working days. You’ll need to have at least 4 non-working days worth of data for a target to be calculated.
- For example, if your normal usage for a Power Down event was 0.5 kWh, and you use 0.1 kWh, 0.4 kWh will be used to calculate your reward or go towards your target.
- If your normal usage for a Power Up event was 0.5 kWh, and you use 1 kWh, 0.5 kWh will be used to calculate your reward or go towards your target.
4. Power Move Flex Rewards
4.1 As Power Move Flex is part of the CrowdFlex trial, we’re testing multiple ways a customer can earn rewards for helping manage demand on the grid.
4.2 Your total reward will depend on the reward group you are randomly placed into, how many events you participate in and/or how much you’re able to shift into or out of event times.
4.3 Before the trial begins, you will be randomly placed into a trial group. Your trial group determines how you will be rewarded. You will be notified of what you can earn in your event notification emails.
The various ways customers may earn rewards are as follows:
4.4 Reward per kWh shifted - Customers will be given a pence per kWh value in their event notification email. For every kWh you shift above or below your normal usage, you’ll earn based on the value for that event.
- Your reward per event will depend on how much electricity you can move above or below your normal usage (depending on the event type) and the price set per event.
- If you don’t reduce your electricity use either below your normal usage, or increase it above your normal usage, (depending on the event type) then you won’t receive a reward for that event.
- For example, if the reward value is £0.50 per kWh shifted in a Power Down event, and you shift 0.5kWh below the baseline, you’ll earn £0.25 for that event.
4.5 Community Bonus - Some groups will have the ability to earn a bonus based on their communities performance, in addition to earning a [Reward per kWh] per event.
- In this group, the top 10 of communities will earn a bonus.
- Bonus amounts will be confirmed in your monthly emails.
- Your community will be based on the first 2 letters of your postcode, if the community size is too large, we may split this community out further. We will let you know which community you are in at the start of the trial.
- Community performance will be ranked on the amount of kWh shifted above or below your normal usage as a combined total across all participants in that community, over an entire month.
- For example, if your community finishes in 3rd place for July, each member of the community will earn
- To be eligible for the bonus, customers need to opt in and participate in at least 50% of events each month.
4.6 Earn Free Electricity - Some groups will earn the chance to have a Power Up event on a Sunday where electricity used is free. You can earn up to a maximum event duration of 2 hours, where for the hours you’ve earned your electricity costs will be paid back to you.
- You won’t earn a reward per event, instead, your reward will be unlocking a Power Up event where your electricity usage is paid for by OVO.
- The duration of the event will be determined by either:
- The amount of kWh you have shifted in events (where you have opted in) the week before
- The % of events (where you have opted in) you’ve successfully shifted in the week before - You’ll be advised in your event notifications what your target is to unlock the enhanced event.
- Usage during the Enhanced Power Up event will be paid to you in the form of a bill credit.
- A fair usage cap of 1kWh per hour will be applied, anything over 1kWh per hour won’t be credited back.
- We’ll let you know in your weekly summary email when this event will be.
4.7 Each month the rewards you get through these events will vary depending on:
- The number of Power Up or Power Down events there are
- The reward value of the events (each event may have a different reward value)
4.8 There is no guarantee that you will earn a minimum reward amount from taking part in Power Move Flex.
4.9 Your total reward will depend on how much electricity you can move above or below your normal usage, how many events you take part in (depending on the event type) and the price/reward set per event.
4.10 If you don’t reduce your electricity use either above or below your normal usage (depending on the event type) then you won’t receive a reward for that event.
How your reward is paid
4.11 All rewards, regardless of which trial group you’re randomly allocated to, are applied as credit directly to your bill.
4.12 You’ll be credited each month with the sum of all rewards earned in the previous month. For example, for any rewards earned in July, you’ll receive energy credit in August.
4.13 If you pay by Direct Debit, the Direct Debit amount you pay per month won’t change. The energy credit will show as a separate line item on your bill.
4.14 If your account has a negative balance, any reward paid will be used to pay off what’s owed.
4.15 There’s no cash alternative to the reward, and it’ll be paid as energy credit on your bill only.
What happens if I don’t meet the criteria to receive a reward?
4.16 For a Power Up event, you won’t be eligible to receive any reward if you don’t increase your electricity use to above your normal usage.
For a Power Down event, you won’t be eligible to receive any reward for an event if you don’t reduce your electricity use to below your normal usage.
4.17 If your smart meter isn’t communicating you won’t be able to receive a reward. This is because we won’t have the data we need to correctly calculate your energy usage
4.18 If we’re unable to read your smart meter data for 3 days after the event, then you won’t be eligible for the reward. If your smart meter isn’t communicating you won’t be able to receive a reward as we won’t have the data we need to correctly calculate your energy usage.
