Smart charging is when you charge your EV at home. The smart bit comes from our intelligent tech making sure your vehicle is charged when the grid is greenest, within the time you need it charged by. You set this time through the app.
Smart charging with Charge Anytime unlocks the cheaper charging rate of 7p per kWh. It helps move the UK energy system towards a smarter, greener way of using energy. If more people use energy when the grid is greener, together we can rely less on fossil fuels to keep power flowing at peak times.
If you’re switching to OVO and would like to add Charge Anytime to your plan, you’ll need to wait until your energy supply and online account is fully set up. This could take up to 4 to 6 weeks.
Once you’re all set up, head over to the Offers section in your online account nd select Charge Anytime.
At the end of the month, we work out how much energy you've used to smart charge your EV. We'll use this info to credit your account in the first week of the following month. So that your smart charging rate reflects our 7p per kWh rate.
For example:
The Charge Anytime rate is 7p a kWh. And let's say your standard electricity rate is 26p a kWh.
We’ll credit you 19p for each kWh you’ve used to smart charge your EV. To make your smart charging rate 7p.
This means if you use 100 kWh of energy smart charging your EV, you’ll get £19 in credit back on your bill.
You can override your smart charging schedule at any time. This will let you top-up quickly when you need to, at your standard home electricity rate.
The next time you charge, you’ll automatically go back to your smart charging schedule.
Yes, you can get Charge Anytime if you have a solar compatible charger. You’ll need to make sure you connect using your charger instead of your EV if that is also compatible.
We’ve introduced a fair usage policy meaning the maximum Charge Anytime credit you can receive on your bill is £100 per month. This works out as about 571 kWh of smart charging per month1 and will vary slightly depending on home tariff rate and the current Charge Anytime rate.
It’s very unlikely you’ll smart charge above this amount of energy per month. 571 kWh is roughly the equivalent of driving 2,284 miles a month.2 There are no restrictions on the total charging consumption however if you exceed the maximum Charge Anytime Credit of £100 any consumption above the cap will be billed at your home tariff rate.
1 Assuming an SVT rate of 24.51p per kWh and a Charge Anytime rate of 7p per kWh the Charge Anytime credit would equate to 17.51p per kWh. A maximum Charge Anytime credit of £100 equates to 571.1 kWh.

The 7p per kWh rate is effective whenever you smart charge your EV. If you'd like to override your smart charging schedule to top up quickly, you'll be charged at your standard home energy electricity rate. The next time you charge, you’ll automatically go back to your smart charging schedule. A maximum monthly Charge Anytime Credit of £100 per month per account applies. Any smart charging consumption that exceeds the maximum Charge Anytime Credit will be charged at your tariff’s usual rate.
Actual sum is £542.81. When you add Charge Anytime to your plan, your home energy rate will stay the same, but the energy consumed by your EV will be charged at an effective rate of 7p per kWh when EV smart charging (thanks to payment of your Charge Anytime charging credit).
The £542 saving is based on an average Charge Anytime customer using 3100kWh a year to charge their EV using the Charge Anytime add on. The Charge Anytime rate on 01/07/2025 is 7p per kWh for Charge Anytime charging compared to the OVO’s UK average SVT rate of 24.51p per kWh. Actual savings will vary depending on vehicle efficiency, driving style, EV charging usage and the cost per kWh of your standard home energy tariff.
This saving claim has been calculated by comparing the 'Tesla Model 3 Standard Range RWD: 210 miles' doing the UK average of 7,000 miles with Charge Anytime with a smart charging rate of 7p per kWh & 3.65m/kWh versus the 'BMW 3 Series with a 820 Mile Range and 13 Gallon Tank' doing 7,000 miles using petrol where the price per litre is £1.32. The 'Tesla Model 3 Standard Range RWD: 210 miles ' equates to 1.92p per mile. Whilst the 'BMW 3 Series 820 Mile Range, 13 Gallon Tank' equates to 9.51p per mile. Resulting in driving petrol being over 4 times more expensive.
Our smart tech aims to charge your car when the grid has more renewable energy in it, within the time you’ve set. Meaning it’s less likely your EV will be charged by energy from fossil fuels.
Please note, if you have a BMW or MINI, in some cases you may lose your preconditioning schedule when you add Charge Anytime. We’re working with BMW and MINI to find a way to fix this.

The efficiency figure is also based on standardised test data after the battery had been fully charged (to 100%) and may not reflect real world driving. Actual efficiency differs depending on multiple variables, including selected vehicle and configuration, accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles, route conditions, speed, vehicle age, battery age and temperature and vehicle load. The actual number of free miles the customer receives may be less than the maximum stated miles and will depend on the actual efficiency of the selected vehicle in the real world. Offer is for an estimated number of free miles calculated on the basis of the costs to the customer when they 'smart charge' using 'Charge Anytime'. OVO is offering up to 2,700 free Charge Anytime miles through £50 credit for Volvo customers who add Charge Anytime to their plan. This offer is available to new and existing OVO customers who don't already have Charge Anytime. 2,700 free miles is based on a Volvo EC40 Single Motor Extended Range driving 3.8 miles per kWh, which equates to 714 free kWhs (actual sum: 2,714 miles based on WLTP). Our Charge Anytime rate is 7p per kWh when smart charging, which works out at £50 free credit. Actual mileage received will vary depending on your EV model, your driving style, and other external factors.
