Charge Anytime FAQs
Packed full of handy information, this is the page for you if you’ve got any questions about Charge Anytime – OVO's discounted EV charging tariff add-on.
Charge Anytime is changing
On 4 November, we’re introducing flexible monthly plans with home and public charging in one fixed payment.1 Pick a Standard or Premium plan to lock in your miles and unlock loads of extra perks. Or choose pay as you go - this will replace the current Charge Anytime rate.
The pay as you go rate will be increasing from 7p per kWh to 14p per kWh on the 4 November.
If you’re a Volvo customer who smart charges in the Volvo Cars app, or you’re a customer who’s taken up one of our Volkswagen Group Free Miles Offers, you might still be able to access our exclusive partnership pay as you go rate of 7p per kWh. More information can be found below.
1 - A fixed monthly payment for all your EV charging, when you sign up to your chosen monthly plan and charge up to the home mileage cap associated with that plan. Any mileage up to the cap will be credited for at your home tariff rate. Mileage over the cap you will not be credited for, effectively meaning you'll be charged at your home tariff rate for mileage above your plan cap. Your home tariff rate will also apply to urgent charging. Public charging is based on using up to the annual voucher amount for public charging associated with your monthly plan, for example £120 if you were to sign up to the Premium monthly plan.
Introducing monthly plans
Charge Anytime monthly plans are our charging products that offer one monthly fee for your home and public charging. Plus other perks depending on which package you choose. Here are more details of the current plans available.
Each plan has a home charging mileage allowance. You’ll be billed your monthly plan fee and then we’ll credit you for your home EV charging. We’ll also give you a public charging voucher, which is included within the cost of the monthly plan along with any other perks associated with your plan.
Download OVO Charge from the App Store or Google Play to manage your monthly plan. Schedule charging sessions and track how much of your monthly plan you’ve used in the app. If you’ve gone over your monthly allowance, you’ll see this information in the OVO Charge app. You can also manage and redeem your perks in the app too.
Everything can be managed in either the OVO energy app or through our website in the logged in account area. You can check compatibility by sharing your charger make and EV details and then select your monthly plan.
Read our list of compatible chargers and EVs to see if your setup will work with Charge Anytime. Choose a plan, we’ll then ask you to agree to data sharing and terms. Download OVO Charge to activate your device and start smart charging.
If you’re an existing Charge Anytime customer using the Charge Anytime app choose your new plan in the “Your add-ons” section of the OVO energy app or “Your plan” section if in your web logged in account. Once you’ve done this, download OVO Charge from the App Store or Google Play and log in using your OVO account details and we’ll automatically link your existing EV or charger so you can get going straight away.
To cancel your monthly plan, you can either:
Choose ‘Cancel my add-on’ in the ‘Manage add-ons’ section of your OVO energy account
On a browser, find “Plan” in your OVO energy account, and choose “Cancel add-on” in Charge Anytime
In OVO Charge you can cancel in “Account”
Your plan will be cancelled at the end of the month. You can continue accessing your plan mileage and any perks until then.
There are a few different elements to how these plans are billed:
Your monthly plan fee - charged at the beginning of each month, this is based on the plan you choose and covers the cost of your plan’s home mileage allowance, public charging voucher and any other perks associated with your plan.
Credits - we’ll credit the kWh that you use to charge your car, in line with your monthly plan home charging allowance (explained below). This is shown on your bill the month after you’ve used it.
Extra charging costs - any charging that you use over your monthly allowance will be charged at your usual home tariff rate, this will appear as normal electricity use on your bill.
At the start of the month you’d be charged your monthly fee for the Premium plan of £37.50
During the month you smart charge your car for the equivalent of 900 miles
We credit you for those 900 miles, this is based on a vehicle efficiency of 4 miles per kWh. Which means we’d apply a credit for 225 kWh to your bill
If your usual home tariff rate is 25p per kWh, we’ll credit you for a total of £56.25, which would appear on your bill the following month
This effectively means all your EV charging will be covered up to the maximum mileage allowance
If you go over the mileage allowance of your plan, you’ll still be able to charge, but you’ll be charged for the kWh that you use above your monthly allowance.
For example:
You smart charge your car for an equivalent of 1,100 miles
If your usual home tariff rate is 25p per kWh, we’ll credit you for a total of £62.50, which would appear on your bill the following month
This means for the 100 miles above your plan allowance you would not receive credit for. This will be charged at your usual home tariff rate, this will appear as normal electricity use on your bill
All our monthly plans include EV Charger Cover and a public charging voucher as standard. Our Premium and Plus plans include even more perks with multi-car Plus plans coming with a £240 public charging voucher. Here are more details on each plan and how to redeem your perks.
It costs slightly more to apply subsidised charging for multiple vehicles in one home. This means the multi-car monthly plans are slightly more than double the single car cost.
You can access your perks in the OVO Charge app. Go to your “Account” and choose “Perks”. You’ll see:
your public charging voucher balance and expiry date
a link to take out your EV Charge Cover
No, you can cancel your monthly plan at any time. Your home energy contract won’t be affected. Cancellation starts at the end of each month so you can continue to access your charging miles and perks until then.
When signing up to a monthly plan your first monthly fee will be adjusted depending on the day you sign up. For example, if you signed up to the Premium plan, which is £37.50 a month, on day 16 of a 30 day month - you’d be billed £18.75. You’ll still receive your full monthly mileage allowance no matter what day of the month you sign up.
If you choose to cancel your plan this will happen on the first day of the following month. This means you’ll still receive your full mileage allowance and be charged the full monthly fee for your final month.
Usage of other perks included within your monthly plan won’t be affected by when you sign up and you’ll be able to use them straight away. When you cancel your plan any unused benefits including extra perks will be lost.
Yes, you can switch between monthly plans at any time. When you choose to switch, your new monthly plan will become active on the 1st day of the following month. Your existing perks will still be available from your old plan but they won’t renew. If you choose a plan with more perks or higher mileage this will be added to your existing allowance.
If you’re switching from pay as you go to a monthly plan this will start at midnight the next day. The fee you pay will be adjusted to reflect the day your plan starts.
No, your monthly miles for your plan will reset on the first day of each month. For example, if you signed up to the Premium monthly plan and used 800 miles of charging, your next month will reset at the Premium monthly plan amount of 1,000 miles.
How does it work?
Charge Anytime monthly plans offer combined home and public charging for one monthly fee. Each plan has a home mileage allowance. You’ll be billed a monthly fee, and then we’ll credit you EV charging up to the maximum allowance. Included within the cost of the monthly plan fee you’ll also receive your public charging voucher and any other perks associated with your plan. Here are more details of the current plans available.
All the electricity you use in your home and for smart charging will initially be charged at your standard home electricity rate. This is the rate you’ll see in your balance and on your bill.
At the end of the month, we’ll work out how much energy you've used to smart charge your EV. We'll use this to calculate how much credit we need to add to your account. This will be applied in the following month.
Example: If your Charge Anytime rate is 14p a kWh and your standard electricity rate is 26p a kWh.
We’ll credit you 12p for each kWh you’ve used to smart charge your EV. To make your smart charging rate 14p.
This means if you use 100 kWh of energy smart charging your EV, you’ll get £12 in credit back on your bill.
You can override your smart charging schedule by using the Urgent Charge function, to start charging your EV immediately. This is charged at your standard usual home tariff rate, not 14p per kWh.
You can find out more about how we calculate your credit in our terms.
Download OVO Charge from the App Store or Google Play to manage your charging. If you’ve been using the Charge Anytime app you’ll need to start using OVO Charge instead. Later this year we’ll be removing the Charge Anytime app from the Google Play and App Store. If you’re still using the app to charge we’ll let you know when the app will be turned off.
We’ll make sure your EV is being smart charged at the cheapest, greenest times. By putting your EV’s details in the OVO Charge app, we can work out the best time to smart charge, and push a command to your EV or charger, depending on how you’re connected to start charging. You can also check how much money Charge Anytime is saving you, right there in the app.
Use the OVO Charge app to override your smart charging schedule with the Urgent Charge function if you urgently need to top-up. This will be charged at your standard home electricity rate.
Note: If you drive a Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, C40 Recharge, EX40 or EC40 (and don’t have solar panels) you can manage your charging in the Volvo Cars app.
Yes, absolutely. But it’s important to know that the OVO Charge app will instruct your EV to start and stop charging throughout your smart charging schedule – this is to maximise use of the greenest and cheapest energy on the grid. This means that if you manually set a charging schedule in your EV or charger app, it’ll be overridden by the OVO Charge app. We recommend not setting schedules in your EV or charger app and managing all your charging in OVO Charge.
If you’re an existing Charge Anytime app customer just:
download OVO Charge
create your new OVO Charge account
log in using your OVO account details so we can link your EV or charger
We’ll do the work in the background to link your existing devices in OVO Charge so you can get charging straight away. You won’t need to do anything in the Charge Anytime app but we recommend deleting the Charge Anytime app once you’re set up on the OVO Charge app. Your previous charging insights for up to 3 months and schedules will also transfer over when you switch to OVO Charge.
Important: Please make sure you don’t delete your Charge Anytime account before logging in to OVO Charge. We’ll need your Charge Anytime account to still be active when you switch so we link your existing charger or EV.
It’s free to remove Charge Anytime. To remove it you can:
Choose “Cancel my add-on’ in the ‘Manage add-ons” section of your OVO energy account
On a browser, find “Plan” in your OVO energy account, and choose “Cancel add-on” in Charge Anytime
Your add-on will be cancelled at midnight the day after cancellation.
We'll calculate your credit up to the date you leave and add it to your account the following month.
If you’re on a monthly plan you can remove your add on, however this will happen on the first day of the next month meaning you’ll continue to receive your full mileage allowance and be charged the full monthly fee for your final month.
If you’re on pay as you go we'll calculate your credit up to the date you leave and add it to your account the following month.
If you have any issues, please call us on 0330 175 9678 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, excluding bank holidays).
Using the OVO Charge app
Please check that you can log in to your EV or Charger app. If you can’t, or if your EV’s app isn’t working, then the OVO Charge app won’t work. Common reasons why your EV’s app won’t work include:
Your EV’s app has a technical issue – this will usually sort itself out in an hour or two.
You’ve changed your username and password, so need to log in again.
Please check that your EV is able to connect to the internet when plugged in and charging at home. If your EV can’t connect – either via wifi or an onboard cellular connection – then the OVO Charge app won’t work as expected.
The OVO Charge app connects to your EV in exactly the same way as your EV’s app. The only difference is that the OVO Charge app will instruct your EV to start or stop charging when plugged in at home – this is to maximise use of the greenest and cheapest energy on the grid.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The OVO Charge app does not interact with any other part of your EV. Charge Anytime can only schedule your EV to start and stop charging when you’re plugged in at home.
Yes, you can add more than one EV to Charge Anytime – the app can control charging for several EVs.
You’ll be able to see the savings for each individual EV in the savings screen of your OVO Charge app.
Monthly plans have multi-vehicle plus options which are suited to households with more than one EV. These plans have higher available mileage compared to the Standard and Premium plans.
To add another EV, go to the OVO Charge “Devices” page and select the “Connect another vehicle” button.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Charge Anytime only supports multiple EVs, not multiple chargers or a combination of EV and charger. Here’s our list of current compatible EVs and chargers.
If you've linked your charger to Charge Anytime (not your EV), and use it to charge more than one EV, you won't be able to see the savings for each individual EV.
Yes. Go to the “Devices” page in the account tab and remove your EV or charger. Then connect your other device instead.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Before swapping your connection, make sure the EV or charger you want to swap to is compatible with Charge Anytime.
When connecting to Charge Anytime via your charger, your charger doesn’t know the battery capacity of your EV. The OVO Charge app needs to know the battery capacity, so it can work out your smart charging schedule.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If possible, we need to know the usable battery capacity. This is the amount of energy your battery can actually use now, taking into consideration safety measures and any degradation. You should be able to find this in your EV's app, or in-car display or touchscreen. If you can’t find its actual usable capacity, you can enter its original battery capacity from the manufacturer.
When connecting to Charge Anytime via your charger, your charger doesn’t talk directly to your EV. This means your charger doesn’t know how much battery power your EV has, or how full it is. The OVO Charge app estimates your charge and charges your EV to full.
If you want to limit the maximum charge of your EV, we recommend setting this in your EV’s app. The charger can’t override any maximum charge you set. Once your EV stops accepting charge, the app assumes the battery is full and stops charging.
You can add more than one EV to Charge Anytime, and the app can control charging for multiple EVs at once. Charge Anytime only supports multiple EVs, not multiple chargers or a combination of EV and charger.
The insights and savings may be slightly different in OVO Charge compared to the Charge Anytime app. The Charge Anytime app only uses an estimation of savings whereas OVO Charge takes the data that is used to generate your bill to calculate savings, for example, your live home tariff rate. The OVO Charge insights are accurate and reflect exactly what you’ll receive in bill credits.
If you’re having a technical issue with adding another EV, or need help connecting your EV, you can email [email protected] or call us on 0330 175 9678. We’re here Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays), 9am to 5pm.
Charging your EV
If your plans change and you need your EV to start charging as soon as you plug it in, you can use the Urgent Charge function. This lets you temporarily override your smart charging schedule and fully charge your EV as quickly as possible.
You can Urgent Charge by pressing the button in the app, or by using your EV’s app or touch screen display. This will override the current smart schedule and force the EV to start charging immediately. Just remember, you won’t receive the discounted Charge Anytime Pay as you go rate or monthly plan credits when using the Urgent Charge function. You'll pay your standard home electricity unit rate.
Using the Urgent Charge function to override the smart charging schedule is charged at your usual home tariff rate.
Charge Anytime only works when you’re plugged in and smart charging at home. When you’re away from home, you won't be able to get the cheaper rate but you’ll be able to use the public charging section in the OVO Charge app giving you access to public charging at 400,000+ public charge points across Europe at some of the biggest charging networks – like Osprey, MFG, InstaVolt, TotalEnergies, Allego, FastNed, and Ionity.
If you want to find out more about charging away from home, check out the public section of the OVO Charge app. If you’re on a monthly plan you’ll get your public charging voucher which you can use in the public charging section of OVO Charge.
So you can get monthly plan credits or the pay as you go rate, we only let your EV charge during the cheapest and greenest times.2 This often means that your charging will start sometime after you plug in. If your plans change, and you need your EV to start charging immediately, you can press the Urgent Charge button in the app – you'll be charged your standard home electricity rate to do this.
2 - Our smart tech aims to charge your car when the grid has more renewable energy in it, within the time you’ve set. Meaning it’s less likely your EV will be charged by energy from fossil fuels. The cost of smart charging is cheaper compared to charging your vehicle at your home tariff rate. For example, our Charge Anytime pay as you go rate is 14p per kWh compared to a standard variable tariff rate of 26.34p per kWh.
Yes. It’s essential that you remove any previously programmed schedules from your wall charger as these will interfere with the OVO Charge app.
We’ve introduced a fair usage policy meaning the maximum Charge Anytime pay as you go credit you can receive on your bill is £100 per month. This works out at about 810 kWh of smart charging per month3 and will vary slightly depending on home tariff rate and the current Charge Anytime rate.
Most customers will not smart charge above this amount of energy per month. 810 kWh is roughly the equivalent of driving 3,241 miles a month.4 There are no restrictions on the total charging consumption however if you exceed the maximum Charge Anytime pay as you go credit of £100 any consumption above the cap will be billed at your home tariff rate.
3 Assuming a standard variable tariff rate of 26.34p per kWh and a Charge Anytime rate of 14p per kWh the Charge Anytime credit would equate to 12.34p per kWh. A maximum Charge Anytime credit of £100 equates to 810.37 kWh.
4 This is based on an EV customer driving at an average of 4 miles per kWh.
Billing
We apply Charge Anytime pay as you go and monthly plan credit to your account at the start of every month although on some occasions this may be delayed, for example, technical issues delaying crediting. It’ll also appear on your monthly OVO energy bill under the heading Charge Anytime pay as you go or monthly plan credit depending what plan you’re on. The credit shown on your bill will be for the electricity you used for smart charging the previous month. So in the first week of September, you’ll see your credit for August in your online OVO account or OVO app.
If you’re on a monthly plan in addition to receiving charging credits up to your plan mileage cap you’ll also be billed your monthly plan fee. This will be displayed on your bill as “Charge Anytime - monthly plan” followed by the choice of plan you’re on, for example, “premium”.
Your Charge Anytime Credit won’t affect your Direct Debit. You can ask for this to be refunded, if your account is in enough credit. Any refunds will be applied in line with our refund policy where you can find more information on refund eligibility.
Please email your query and the screenshots of your charging history to [email protected], or call us on 0330 175 9678. Lines are open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, excluding bank holidays.
OVO can’t take responsibility for the quality of the data supplied by your home EV charging setup. Any inaccuracies will need to be taken up with your manufacturer.
Being a pay monthly customer means we can automatically add Charge Anytime credit to your account in the first week of each month. This avoids any delays or the need for any manual adjustments to your credit amount.
Your smart meter also lets us track your energy usage in real-time to charge your EV. This ensures that you're always charging at the cheapest and greenest times.
Charge Anytime for Volvo and Volkswagen Group customers
The lower rate is part of the special partnerships we have with Volvo and Volkswagen Group UK. We’ve teamed up to be able to provide exclusive offers for our shared customers with specific EV models. It’s a perk that comes from our tight collaboration with these brands, and within the terms and conditions of their offers.
For Volkswagen Group UK customers, the 7p pay as you go rate is part of the terms and conditions for the VWG Free Miles Offers, as agreed with Volkswagen Group (VWG). VWG includes Audi, Skoda, CUPRA and Volkswagen. Customers must have taken up a Free Miles offer and then remain on Charge Anytime pay as you go to take advantage of the offers.
For Volvo customers who smart charge in the Volvo Cars app, we’re not able to offer Monthly plans right away. We’re working to make them available to customers as soon as possible. In the meantime, we’ve agreed with Volvo to offer this exclusive Pay as you go rate for customers.
To be eligible to receive the special partnership rate:
Volkswagen Group customers: If you’ve been confirmed as eligible for one of our VWG Retail or Company Car Offers, you’ll be able to keep your 7p/kWh rate for now if you stay on pay-as-you-go. This will also mean you’ll still be eligible for your future Volkswagen Group free miles offers, like your anniversary miles.
You can still switch to a monthly plan if you’d prefer, but if you do, you'll lose your 7p rate and access to your future Volkswagen Group free miles offers.
Please note, our VWG Retail and Company Cars Offers are only available to eligible vehicles purchased before the 30th September 2025.
For more information, see the full terms and conditions here.
Volvo customers: You must have an eligible model and be smart charging through the Volvo Cars app on pay as you go. Eligible models include: XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, C40 Recharge Pure Electric, EX40 or EC40. Find more details about the Volvo offer here. At this time, you won’t be able to access monthly plans.
Monthly plans are currently only supported in the OVO Charge app. We’re working hard with Volvo to bring monthly plans to you, and will let you know once there's an update.
In the meantime, you'll continue to pay 7p per kWh until monthly plans are available to you.
