How we worked out the card ratings

Using the official match stats from 2016’s tournament we were able to come up with our own stats. The higher the rating - the better the score.

Weight - OK, for this one we admit we couldn't find any official statistics. Instead, we looked at the team’s playing style and it’s reliance on the physicality of its big players.

Speed - By looking at how many ‘line breaks’ a team made over the course of the 2016’s 6 Nations, we determined a team’s overall speed.

Discipline - This rating is determined by the amount of penalties each team conceded in last year’s matches. However, the lower the rating, the worse the team’s discipline.

Recycling the ball - It’s a cliche but we think rugby matches are always ‘won at the breakdown’. For this one, we combined the amount of times a team cleared a ruck and won a maul in each game and then totted them up over the competition to reach a percentage.

Grand slams - This one was easy. This is how many times a team has won the 6 Nations in previous years without losing a single game.

Rugby not your thing?

If you’re not that fussed about it but think you’ll be forced to watch anyway, our rugby blagger’s guide is for you. Read these facts and you’ll be bluffing your way through the tournament like a pro.
