Picture the scene: you’re just about to settle down for an evening in front of the TV when suddenly – blip! – the power goes out.

It’s a familiar story for the UK’s 11 million pre-payment energy customers, who rely on keys, tokens and antiquated meters for their power. Topping up can involve a slog to the local shops, battling the elements to access outdoor meters or even days and nights without power entirely because of faulty top-up cards or early shop closing times.

But this inconvenience will soon be a thing of the past for OVO PAYG customers, who can now take advantage of our new Smart PAYG+ app. This clever app allows you to manage all elements of your energy, from topping up to monitoring your usage - on your phone, tablet or computer, anytime, anywhere. 

With Smart PAYG+ you can top up instantly at any time of the day or night, either through the app itself, by text message or online, which means no more treks to the shop.

A credit countdown with optional alerts means you’ll never be caught out again, and you can even set automatic top-ups, so you don’t have to wait for the power to go before taking action. Usage data means you can get a real handle on how much energy you’re using, and finally, the cheapest rates on the market and an online-only discount means OVO’s Smart PAYG+ plan offers great value as well as total convenience and control. 

OVO pre-payment customer Mat Roberts,35, lives with his son in Doncaster and has been using OVO’s smart meters since last year.

“Now I don’t have to leave my sofa to top up as I can do it all using OVO’s Smart PAYG+ app,” he says. “I have even used it when I’ve been on holiday and my electricity was running low, so my security lights would still work. I was so glad to see the back of those keys, which didn’t work half the time anyway and were easy to lose the other half of the time! It’s about time someone brought this experience up-to-date and made it work for our convenience, rather than the energy companies’.”
