You need to:
- Be a current OVO customer.
- Have a connected Vaillant heat pump.
- Have a smart meter that sends half-hourly readings to OVO.
Please note that the benefit is capped at 6,000 kWh a year. Check our T&Cs to see the eligibility criteria in full.
It needs to be an aroTHERM 3 or aroTHERM Plus Vaillant heat pump, from 2016 onwards. You also need the myVAILLANT internet gateway installed on your heat pump. This lets the heat pump connect to the internet, so data can be sent back to Vaillant and OVO.
You can get Heat Pump Plus on any plan, as long as you’re an OVO customer.
We’re proud to offer great value for heat pump customers. But our products might change in line with the energy market – or as we learn more about what our customers need and how they’re using their heat pumps. Right now, there’s no planned end date for Heat Pump Plus. But we'll let you know in advance if the rate or add-on changes, and we'll tell you what your options are. You can find out more information in our T&Cs.
We apply credit for Heat Pump Plus to your account in the first 7 working days of each month. It’ll also appear on your monthly OVO bill under Heat Pump Plus Credit.
With Heat Pump Plus, all electricity you use will first be charged at the normal unit rate you pay on your OVO plan. At the end of the month, we work out how much energy you’ve used to power your heat pump. We’ll use this info to credit your energy account in the first 7 working days of the following month. This means your electricity rate to power your heat pump reflects the 15p per kWh rate for Heat Pump Plus.
For example:
- The Heat Pump Plus rate is 15p per kWh. And let’s say your standard electricity rate is 28p per kWh.
- We’ll credit you 13p (the difference between the Heat Pump Plus rate and your standard electricity rate) for each kWh you’ve used to power your heat pump.
And that means, if you use 300kWh powering your heat pump, you’ll get £39 in credit back on your bill.
Your serial number is 28 characters long. It starts with the number 21, and ends with the letter N followed by a single other number.
- For Vaillant aroTHERM 5, 8, 11, and 15kW, the number is either on the back of the outdoor heat pump, or on the control box inside it.
- For Vaillant aroTHERM Plus 3.5, 5, 7, 10 and 12kW, the number is on the bottom right hand panel of the outdoor heat pump.
- If you already have the myVAILLANT app, follow these steps:
1. Press the information button.
2. Select System View.
3. Select the dropdown tab under HEAT GENERATOR. The serial number will appear underneath.
Customers on OVO’s Solar Install or Solar and Battery Install Smart Export Guarantee export tariff can’t currently access Heat Pump Plus. We’re currently exploring how we can further open up Heat Pump Plus to more customers with solar panels. The myVAILLANT connect internet gateway lets you keep track of your heat pump use, and manage your energy through the myVAILLANT app. You can get one installed through your heat pump installer. You can also arrange an installation with a Heat Geek engineer here.
If your heat pump is connected to the myVAILLANT connect app, that means you already have the myVAILLANT connect internet gateway.
The internet gateway is a small white box that says myVAILLANT connect on it, which will be near your indoor unit. If you have a myVAILLANT connect internet gateway, your app connection should have been set up by your installer when they installed your heat pump.
If you don’t have the app, information on myVAILLANT connect can be found in a handover pack from the installer, including a QR code to download the app. The myVAILLANT app will guide you through the process of connecting your heat pump to the internet.
If you don’t have a myVAILLANT connect internet gateway, you can get one installed through your heat pump installer. You can also arrange an installation with a Heat Geek engineer here.

1 Compatible with Vaillant's aroTHERM 3 heat pumps post 2016 or aroTHERM Plus heat pumps with a connected myVAILLANT connect internet gateway. This allows the heat pump to connect to the internet, so data can be sent back to Vaillant and OVO.
2 Actual sum is £303.54. When you add Heat Pump Plus to your plan, your home energy rate will stay the same, but the energy consumed by your heat pump will be charged at an effective rate of 15p per kWh (thanks to payment of your Heat Pump Plus credit).The £303.54 saving is based on an air source heat pump with a UK average Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (or efficiency rating) of 2.8 and an annual consumption of 3,644 kWh with the Heat Pump Plus add-on compared to OVO's average SVT rate of 23.33p per kWh. Actual savings will vary depending on your heat pump usage, efficiency rating and the cost per kWh of your standard home energy tariff.
