How to find your MPRN number, and when to use it

If you’ve got an electricity supply (and let’s face it, who hasn’t?!), you might already be familiar with an MPAN or Meter Point Administration Number. It’s the number that identifies the specific electricity supply for your home – and it’s sometimes also known as your “supply number”.
But there’s also another version of this number for your gas supply, which is commonly known by the catchy little acronym “MPRN” – or Meter Point Reference Number. Here, we’ll explain what it is, how to find it, and what you might want to use it for.
What is an MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number)?
An MPRN, or Meter Point Reference Number, is the unique 6 to 11-digit number that identifies the gas account for your property. It’s also sometimes referred to as the “M Number”. Remember, it refers to your gas, rather than your electricity supply – and it’s not the same thing as your customer account number.
When you might need your MPRN
Your MPRN will most likely come in handy if you change supplier, or move home. That’s because this number is linked specifically to your property.
If you’re moving to a new energy supplier, you may need to let your new supplier know your MPRN as part of the switching process.
And if you move home, your MPRN will, of course, change. You may need to give your energy supplier the MPRN for your old home when you move. And when you move into your new home, your supplier will also need to update your records with your new MPRN.

How to find your MPRN number
To find your MPRN, check your latest gas bill. Depending on your supplier, you could see it displayed at the top – or it might be under “details of charges”, or a similarly-titled area of the bill. You can also call the meter number helpline on 0870 608 1524. Tell them your postcode and the first line of your address, and they'll give you your MPRN, and the name of your current gas supplier. Calls cost 7p per minute.
By the way, you won’t be able to spot your MPRN on your gas meter – so there’s no need to bother looking there.
Can I find my MPRN number online?
Indeed you can! Just visit Find My Supplier and enter your address details, and you’ll be able to find your MPRN in seconds.
What to do if you’re not sure who your supplier is
Again, your best bet in this case is to call the meter number helpline on 0870 608 1524, or use the online service Find My Supplier. They’ll be able to tell you who your current gas supplier is. What if I don’t have a gas bill?
If you can’t find a gas bill to check your number, you can either call the meter number helpline (0870 608 1524), or visit Find My Supplier. With either option, just give your address and you should have your MPRN in just a jiffy.
Is an MPAN or MPRN the same as a meter serial number?
Definitely not. Your meter serial number identifies your home’s meter. But an MPRN is used to identify an individual gas supply point. They may sound the same – but they’re actually 2 very different things. And while you can find a meter serial number on your gas meter, you won’t find the MPRN there.
Does your MPRN number change over time?
As long as you don’t move house, your MPRN won’t change. And it also stays the same even if you move supplier. That’s because it’s a unique number that identifies the gas account for your property. You’ll only ever get a new MPRN if you up-sticks to a new home.
