Landis+Gyr E470 smart meters: all you need to know

Smart meters are great. These nifty digital gas or electricity meters communicate with your energy supplier so they can get your readings automatically. And unlike traditional meters, their In-Home Displays let you see how much energy you’re using in real-time. That helps you to make small changes to stop wasting energy, so you can do your bit to tackle climate change, and cut your bills in the process.
All smart meters essentially do the same job. They clock up your energy use, and then send the readings, so you get a more accurate bill. Problem is, there’s a confusing array of meters out there. And it’s not always easy to figure out what yours is, and whether you’ve got an older generation (SMETS1) or new generation (SMETS2) smart meter. Or for instance, whether you can switch supplier and still keep your smart meter’s smart functionality.
That’s especially true of the Landis+Gyr (L+G) smart meter. Here’s where you can find out everything you need to know about one of the UK’s most popular – and some might say confusing to identify – smart meters!
What is a Landis+Gyr E470 smart meter?
The Landis+Gyr (L+G) is one of the most common smart meter brands in the UK. But figuring out whether your Landis+Gyr is SMETS1 or SMETS2 can be tricky. This is because the same model can apparently be either.
Just to make things even more confusing, L+G gas meters have the same issue!
In fact, as many as 6 different L+G electricity and gas meters all share the same model numbers – but could be either SMETS1 or SMETS2. And the newer SMETS2 versions look and feel so similar to the older versions, that it’s almost impossible to tell them apart. Really helpful, right?!
What type of meter is Landis+Gyr E470?

What does a SMETS1 Landis+Gyr E470 look like?
Here’s an example of an older (SMETS1) Landis+Gyr E470 smart meter:
There’s one key feature that helps you work out if your smart meter is the older (SMETS1) version: they have a separate comms hub next to the meter. In this instance, it’s the little white box labelled Trilliant SEAP-2001-V. And if you have one of these, your gas meter will also be SMETS1.

If I’ve got one of these, can I switch supplier without breaking it?
With some new suppliers, your smart meter might simply lose its smartness and turn into a traditional meter. If so, you’ll probably have to start giving monthly or half-yearly meter readings to your new energy supplier.
If you run into smart meter problems after your transfer – for example, if your meter develops a fault – you may find that your new supplier’s technicians and engineers aren’t familiar with your model of smart meter. If this happens, they might choose to replace your smart meter with a traditional one.
But if both your new and old supplier use the same type of smart meter, you should be able to carry on using your current equipment, and enjoying more or less the same level of functionality.
Will these smart meters work with OVO?
It really depends who installed your meter. If yours was installed by British Gas/Centrica, switching away means that your smart meter will probably temporarily lose its smart functionality. That just means you’ll have to give manual readings for a while.
If your SMETS1 meter was installed by another supplier, it could still work normally with a different supplier. The best course of action is to check with your new supplier first.
Existing SMETS1 meters will eventually receive a software upgrade (if they haven’t already) and be migrated onto the national smart meter network. All SMETS1 meters will eventually be remotely upgraded by the Data Communications Company (DCC) – which is also responsible for protecting your data. Rest assured there's nothing you need to do to make this happen. This software upgrade will enable your SMETS1 meter to work across the same network used by SMETS2 meters.
What does a SMETS2 Landis+Gyr E470 look like?

Pretty much all SMETS2 L+G E470 meters look similar to this sample model – though they might not have a supplier sticker, or a testing/demo reference. One other giveaway that it’s SMETS2 is the comms hub that’s bolted to the top of the meter.

Will the SMETS2 Landis+Gyr E470 work with any supplier?
Yup! All SMETS2 meters should work with any supplier – even if you’re no longer with the supplier that installed the meter.
How do I read a Landis Gyr E470 smart meter?
Gone are the days of venturing into a dingy meter cupboard to get readings. Smart meter readings are now sent automatically. But there may be times where you still want to take a reading yourself. For instance, if you’ve switched energy suppliers and your smart meter isn’t yet compatible with your new supplier’s systems (which means you’d need to give manual readings). Or you might want to take more regular meter readings yourself, so you can keep an even closer eye on your energy use.
