If you pay monthly by Direct Debit

You need a different guide if you’re paying for your energy by monthly Direct Debit.

Guide for Monthly Direct Debit customers

The switching process

It takes around four weeks from when you switch until we start supplying your energy. Your contract summary shows your supply start date.

Your OVO key and card

Your new electricity key and gas card should arrive the day before we start supplying your energy. If you haven’t had them by then, use your old supplier’s key and card until ours arrive.
Don’t top up too much on your old key and card, as they’re set at your old rate. If there’s credit left on them when you start using your OVO key and card, ask your old supplier for a refund.

How to top up

Before you use your key or card for the first time, you need to register them. Then take them to your local PayPoint to add credit. You can also use Payzone to top up your electricity key.

If you’re on our Smart PAYG+ plan

Once your smart meter’s installed, you need to register your bank card:

  1. Log into My OVO, go to ‘Your Account’ and select ‘Add a payment card’.
  2. Fill in details of the account you want to use for top-ups and press ‘Register card’.

How to top up

You’ll still get an OVO card – just one for both electricity and gas – to use at PayPoints. You don’t need to take it home and insert it in the meter; the credit is added as soon as you top up the card.

With Smart PAYG+, once you’ve registered your bank card, you can top up anytime, anywhere by text, in My OVO, or with the OVO Energy app.

You can also use the app to:

  • Create automatic card payments to top up on a regular date.
  • Set top-ups to go out whenever your credit falls to a set level.
  • Get reminders by text or email when your credit’s getting low.
