It’s all about making a difference in the places we call home, enabling our people to get hands on helping out. OVO Gives Back is run by OVO’s charity, OVO Foundation, and powered by our people – that’s over 1,000 employees – all set to get stuck in as volunteers.
This annual charity initiative starts with our employees. Every year, we ask them to nominate local charities that work in OVO Foundation’s core areas: education; energy and environment; and youth poverty.
Next, the OVO Foundation team makes a shortlist, before putting it to internal vote. We do this because we want our people to really connect with the charities we’ll be supporting, and be excited about volunteering and fundraising for them.
The chosen charities will each enjoy a big cash boost of £20,000. As well as this vital financial support, our charities will also enjoy lots of hands on help. To help our people spend longer volunteering, if they give up a day’s annual leave, we match it with a second volunteering day at full pay. And if our people get cracking with fundraising activities for our chosen charities, we’ve also put aside an additional £20,000 to match every penny they raise.
This year, OVO Gives Back is supporting:
With lambs, piglets and goat kids, the Farm is a great family day out. But that’s just the start. Look beyond the farmyard creatures, and you’ll see a range of activities that support vulnerable adults, disadvantaged young people and children growing up in the city. For them, the Farm is also an oasis, an educator, and a community.
1625 Independent People supports over 1800 local children and young adults who face or experienced the devastating effects of homelessness. The charity provides a safe, secure place to live, a network of people to rely on, plus the skills and opportunities vulnerable young people need to get back on track and thrive.
Trees make a huge contribution to our daily lives, where we choose to be and how we feel. They are often taken for granted, but their absence or loss is strongly felt. This Bristol- based charity works to safeguard, enhance and maximise the benefits of local trees and woodlands. Established in 2008, they describe themselves as “small, efficient, cost effective and passionate and proud of what we do”.
Depaul’s mission is to end homelessness and change the lives of those affected by it. Depaul’s London services include emergency overnight, and longer term hostel-based accommodation which support over 400 vulnerable young people every year (aged 16-25 years) who face the terrible prospect of being homeless and sleeping rough.
When we shortlisted our charities, we asked them to provide a summary of how our support will help them – and the projects are exciting and diverse. From getting kids out of doors connecting with nature, through to a ‘Day Stop’ centre where young people in crisis can get vital support, it’s set to be an exciting year – read more about our 2016/17 partners in the ‘All about OVO Gives Back’ blog.
OVO Gives Back is just one of the ways we try to do right by our community – locally and globally. We’ve also set up our own charity, OVO Foundation, which works to make a difference in three areas: education, youth poverty, and energy and the environment.
