It’s the latest thing in brand new, hi-tech, state-of-the-art meters, with all kinds of funky functionality. It can practically polish its own display screen.
With a smart meter, there’s no more need to send us monthly meter readings. Once you’ve got a smart meter it will send us regular meter readings all on its own, communicating with us via a mobile phone network, so you don’t have to. We’ll use those readings to create your statements and bills, so they’ll always be completely accurate and up to date.
You can choose how often your smart meter sends us readings – once every half hour, once a day or once a month. This is known as your ‘data preference’. We’ll ask you which you’d prefer when we install your smart meter. If you don’t let us know, your meter will send readings once a day, as this is its default setting.
Every half hour is best, as it means your statements are as precise as possible.
With a smart meter you can get clear information about the energy you’re using. This can help you to monitor and manage the amount you spend on energy – and hopefully cut your bills.
You just log into My OVO to find out how much energy you’re using (or have used over a given time period), what it has cost you, and how much carbon dioxide (CO2) your energy use is creating.
You can also set alerts and warnings to help you monitor your energy use – and your credit if you’re on PAYG. For instance, you can programme your In-Home Display to warn you if your credit’s getting low. Or, if you want to cap the amount of energy you use each day, you can set an alert to let you know when you’re getting towards a particular spending level or number of kilowatt hours each day.
Smart meters and PAYG
If you’re on a Pay as you go plan, smart meters are much easier to top up, as you no longer need to insert your payment card into the actual meter.
Instead, you get a payment card which you top up at a PayPoint outlet, or online, by text or using our OVO Energy app. Once you’ve topped the card up, it automatically transfers the credit to your smart meter, even if you’re miles away from home.
A smart gas meter is pretty clever, but a smart electricity meter is even cleverer.
If you have a smart gas meter, it constantly measures the amount of gas you use, and uses a Home Area Network to share that information with your smart electricity meter.
However, the linked smart electricity meter collects that information and then shares it with us and with your In-Home Display, as well as passing on data about your electricity use.
