  • Over the next week the Tour will visit Edinburgh and Cardiff, meaning all three capitals will have been visited during OVO Energy’s Tour of Britain and Women’s Tour
  • Electric motorcycles to feature in the individual time trial, taking a small but meaningful step towards turning the Tour of Britain green

London, Wednesday 30 August 2017 - Building on its successful sponsorship of the 2017 Women’s Tour in June, OVO Energy turns its attention to the UK’s most prestigious professional cycle race the 2017 OVO Energy Tour of Britain, featuring the world’s best male cyclists and teams.

For the first time, all three capitals of Great Britain will have been visited by the best in cycling, with the OVO Energy Tour of Britain scheduled to ride through Edinburgh and Cardiff, following on from the thrilling finale of the Women’s Tour in London earlier this year.

As the popularity of cycling in the UK continues to grow, the Tour of Britain gives British cycling fans unparalleled access to watch the world's best teams and riders competing on their doorsteps, with Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas and Team Dimension Data’s Mark Cavendish confirmed to ride.

Chris Houghton, Managing Director, OVO Energy, said: “We’re proud to be the sponsor of the Tour of Britain, the biggest event in British cycling and UK’s largest free-to-watch sporting event. We’ve not only made the Tour of Britain bigger and better with extended live coverage and the strongest field of cyclists ever, we’ve also increased its green credentials. We believe in championing renewable approaches to energy and using smart technology to power a more sustainable future. That’s why, for the first time ever, electric motorcycles will be used during the time trial stage, taking a small but meaningful step towards turning the Tour of Britain green.”

OVO Energy’s sponsorship of the Tour of Britain signals its continued commitment to championing sustainability through smart technology. OVO recently launched EV Everywhere, a new and reliable energy bundle to charge electric vehicles nationwide with 100 percent renewable energy. As part of the Tour, for the first time, electric motorcycles will be used by race officials to power the lead bike during the time trial.

During OVO Energy’s recent electric vehicle launch, a commissioned survey found that sixty-three per cent of UK population are concerned about their impact on the environment, opting for more sustainable ways to travel, with more than a third of Brits already taking part in cycling activities.

OVO Energy will be giving people the opportunity to take part in a Virtual Reality cycling experience, putting fans competitors’ pedals. Spectators will be invited to tackle the arduous Brill Hill, King of the Mountains climb through the virtual reality experience.

Hugh Roberts, Chief Executive of SweetSpot, the race organisers, said: “We’re excited to have OVO Energy on board as title sponsor of the Tour of Britain, following a successful Women’s Tour earlier this year. OVO’s participation has made this year’s Tour series even bigger by enabling the events to grow with more spectators coming to watch the race in their local community, and the opportunity to never miss a slice of the action with live, uninterrupted coverage to encourage the next generation of cycling fans.”

Tony Martin, professional cyclist for Team Katusha-Alpecin, said: "The OVO Energy Tour of Britain is a momentous occasion for cycling fans and people all over Britain, to enjoy the race and show their support. I won the Bristol stage they sponsored last year, so it is good news that they are now sponsoring the entire race.

“Hopefully I have a chance to wear the OVO Energy green jersey following the time trial in this year’s race.  The virtual reality experience they have created sounds great, and will put fans in the shoes of us riders so they get a taste of what it takes to tackle the Tour and understand what a professional cyclist is up against."
