Tuesday 23rd November was a very long way from the average day in the office for a few members of the OVO team. We swapped OVO HQ for a muddy field on the outskirts of Bristol. And instead of predicting power trends, sending emails and writing blogs (yes, your author got her hands dirty), we spent a wild, not-too-wet and very rewarding day planting over 1000 trees.
It turns out there’s quite a technique to it if you want to give your sapling the best possible start in life. From preparing the earth and getting the spacing right, to getting your sapling in the ground and protecting it from wildlife and environmental stresses, the friendly team at The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) have the process down to a fine art.
The friendly team from The Conservation Volunteers showed us the ropes, and joined by volunteers from Bristol City Council and the local community, we quickly got planting.
It’s all down to OVO Energy’s Greener Energy plan customers. These lovely people opt for 100% renewable electricity – and because of them, OVO plans to plant over 157,000 trees by March 2016
352 trees planted, and it was time for tea. Universally acknowledged to be the best tea ever. Even instant coffee tastes heavenly after a couple of hours of hard work!
After tea, we got straight back to the satisfyingly squidgy, muddy, rewarding process of tree planting. Those saplings needed homes, and we weren’t leaving until every last one found the ground.
Planting trees is a good thing for so many reasons. There’s the carbon capture element – around 1 tonne of CO2 per tree for the varieties we planted. Then there’s the nature who’ll find a home. And last but not least, there’s the positive effect for local people – environmentally, and through volunteering to plant (like we did). It’s a real win-win.
