Smart meters don’t use the internet. They send information via a separate, secure national network using either mobile-phone or radio masts depending on your location. If you live in northern areas of the UK, your smart meter uses long-range radio technology, while in central and southern areas, it uses cellular and wireless mesh technology.
The WAN securely sends your electricity and gas meter readings to OVO.
The HAN enables a device called a communications hub that’s connected to your electricity smart meter, to communicate with your electricity and gas meters and In-Home Display (IHD). This allows the IHD to show you near real-time information about your electricity and gas use, as well as what it costs you.
