What to do about your energy supply when you’re moving out

It’s really easy to sort out your energy supply when you’re moving out. This guide tells you everything you need to know.

Moving home can be super-stressful – but at least dealing with your energy supply will be easy. Here’s a quick rundown of what you need to do.

If you’re moving out of a property that OVO supplies

If you’re an OVO member and moving out in the next 28 days, just log in to your OVO account. There you can tell us you’re moving. Easy! We’ll sort everything out after that.

We’ll close your energy account and we won’t charge you any exit fees.

What you'll need to tell us:

  • The date you moved, or will move out of your home
  • Your new address or forwarding details

We'll take a reading automatically on the day you’re moving out, then we’ll send your final bill within 10 days. We’ll also cancel your Direct Debit. We’ll also refund any credit on your OVO account to your bank account within 7 days of getting your final bill.

If you’re moving into a property that OVO supplies

If OVO are already supplying your new home, it’s super simple to get set up. Just head to our home move page. You’ll need to tell us:

  • The date you moved in
  • The meter readings from when you moved in (if possible)
  • Your full name
  • Your date of birth
  • The full address and postcode of your new home
  • Your phone number (either mobile or landline)
  • Your email address
  • Your Direct Debit details

Can I take my OVO account with me to my new home?

Alas, you can’t take your current OVO plan to your new home – even if you’re on a fixed plan. To rejoin OVO, just sign up for a new energy account for your new home as soon as you’re able. You can choose from any of our current energy plans.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take my current OVO plan to my new place?

Unfortunately not – but the good news is you can start a new contract once you’ve moved in.

Your OVO plan only applies to your current home. That means you need to close your energy account and re-apply to join us at your new home.

We might already supply your new home, which will make things easier. But you’ll still need to cancel your current OVO contract and set up a new one.

Do I take my smart meter when I move?

No, the smart meter stays in your old home. Book a smart meter appointment once you're settled in your new place and we'll install it for free.

I’m moving home. What do I do with my In-Home Display (IHD)?

If you’re moving house, please leave your IHD at your old home, so the person moving in can use it. Your IHD only works with the smart meter at your old home, so it won’t work if you remove it. Just leave it somewhere easy to find for whoever’s moving in.

Can OVO start supplying energy on the day I move into my new home?

We’ll start supplying you around 21 days after you move in. Your welcome letter or email will let you know the exact date we’ll start supplying you. Just occasionally, we may run into unexpected problems and have to push that date back a bit. If so, we’ll let you know right away and keep you posted about any new dates. You can also track your switch in your online energy account.

Will there be energy in my new home, even if OVO hasn’t started supplying it yet?

Yes. The previous company will still be supplying energy.

I’m going to pay by monthly Direct Debit for my OVO energy. How do I pay my current supplier until you take over my supply?

About 6 weeks after we’ve taken over your energy supply, the old supplier will send you a bill. It’s based on the final meter readings you’ve sent them. They’ll tell you how you can pay it. You’ll get your first OVO bill around 6 weeks after we start supplying your energy.
