Renewable power with Greener Energy

Meet the community behind it – and why this matters

Our Greener Energy upgrade is all about creating more green electricity, right here in the UK. How? It’s thanks to our community of renewable generators, big and small. Here’s their story – and why buying electricity from them is great for a greener future.

We believe there’s power in numbers

4 main sources of clean power

The renewable electricity we buy all comes from natural sources like wind, solar, hydro, and anaerobic digestion.

60 renewable generators and counting1

Our community sells us their renewable electricity from sites across the UK. And more are joining every month!

150,000 homes worth of power2

That’s how much renewable electricity our community generates right now. As it grows, so will our impact.

We buy straight from the source

Our new upgrade is the most transparent way to buy green power. Here’s how it works. For every drop of electricity our Greener Energy customers use at home, we buy the same amount of green power from our community.

To do this, we use something called Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). We love them because they tell us exactly where the electricity we buy comes from. No woolly stuff. And because they help us support new, independent renewable generators – like small businesses and community groups.

Supporting a sustainable future

We’re helping more small-scale, independent wind and solar farms get up and running. These generators can’t access government subsidies for their energy, which means it can be harder to get funding for their sites. So we’re stepping in. We pay them prices that are well above the going rate for their green power, to show our support.

Why? Because with more renewable power made in the UK, we’ll have lower prices, a greener grid and greater energy security in the long run. Energy that works for people and our planet? Now that’s a deal worth making.

Play your part with our green upgrade

Just add Greener Energy to your plan. That’s 100% renewable electricity3. 100% carbon-neutral gas4. And supercharged support for renewable power in the UK.

Meet a few of our generators

What could be more powerful than a whole community of renewable generators?

Ambition Community Energy

In December 2022, we joined forces with Ambition Community Energy (ACE). This is a community interest company and it’s run just for the benefit of people living in Lawrence Weston, Bristol. By June 2023, their wind turbine will power over 3,000 homes5.

Hillhead Wind farm

Built on a windy hilltop in Shetland, Hillhead Wind Farm is one of our northernmost generators. The farm produced more than 500,000kWh of electricity last year. That's enough clean power for more than 150 homes5.

Clearwell Farm

Clearwell Farm near Cardiff has been generating wind and solar power since 2013. Last summer, working with OVO, the team were able to add extra solar panels to create even more clean power – enough for 1,000 homes5.

2 Figure correct at time of writing in February 2023. Based on Ofgem average annual domestic electricity consumption of 2,900kWh and seasonal normal weather conditions.

3 With Greener Energy, you’ll receive 100% renewable electricity backed by Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) that we have with UK-based generators (which are backed by REGOs to prove the source is renewable). The electricity supplied to your home will still come from the National Grid and come from a mix of sources, but an amount of renewable electricity equal to the amount you’ve used will be added to the grid, directly from a UK-based renewable generator.

4 If you’re a dual fuel customer, Greener Energy also provides 100% carbon-neutral gas (10% green gas backed via renewable certificates (Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs) and 90% offset).
