Frequently Asked Questions

Using OVO Greenlight’s tips and advice can reduce your carbon output as well as your bills. It helps you in 2 main ways:

  1. OVO Greenlight helps you find ways to cut energy waste:

by bringing you clever insights about where you use the most energy at home. All broken down by appliances or activity (like cooking) in the home.

For example, if you like your home so hot you can hoover in your undies while pumping out your favourite tunes...you’ll see some big spikes in your energy use! You’ll also see what impact this has on your home’s carbon emissions.

  1. OVO Greenlight brings you simple tips to save energy at home. It even tells you the best time to put a wash on.

When we all cook dinner or watch TV at the same time, there’s not always enough renewable energy to go around. There’s only so much wind! This means carbon-based energy is used as backup.

Saving energy (and using it at better times) means taking pressure off the energy grid – and cutting your home’s emissions. That’s why OVO Greenlight also shows you the greenest hours to time those washes.

If we all spread our energy use evenly through the day and night, we’ll stop that nasty carbon-based energy being burned – and give the wind an easier time of it.

All sorts, like:

  • Ways to time your laundry and dishwasher to cut carbon emissions
  • 2 minute tasks around the house that can save you energy, like putting reflectors behind your radiators or vacuuming a certain part of your fridge
  • The best times to replace old appliances
  • News about new tech that can reduce your energy use
  • Plus, some DIY ideas too. Homemade draught excluders, anyone?

If you’ve opted in to get marketing emails from us and have a smart meter, you can also get our monthly OVO Greenlight email. It’s packed with ideas about how to save energy through each and every season – plus lots more.

Already a member, and not opted in for emails? Tick here and let’s sort that.

OVO Greenlight is free to every OVO member on every plan. You’ll find it listed on the main menu when you log into your online account.

Wanna get the best out of it? Then get a smart meter installed (you can book one in 2 minutes, here). Smart meters send us info about your energy use, which helps us personalise your energy-saving tips. It takes OVO Greenlight to a whole other level!

Already got one? Make sure you’re sharing readings with us every 30 mins. You can do this under OVO Greenlight in your online account.

It all comes down to the magic of your smart meter. By choosing to send us regular readings, we can see how much your heating, refrigeration, and other appliances use. And this helps us give you truly useful energy-saving tips.

If you don’t have a smart meter, we’ll use info about the energy use of people in similar homes instead. This will help us build an overall picture of where your energy goes.

Not at all! All OVO members can get free access to OVO Greenlight. No matter what plan they’re on, or how long they’re planning to stay with us.

It’s simple – just head to your app or online account and look for OVO Greenlight in the menu.

If you’re opted in to receive our marketing and you use Greenlight through the OVO app, you might receive occasional notifications on your phone. (Which you can switch off in your settings). You’ll also receive a monthly OVO Greenlight email – packed with extra tips and advice.

1 OVO's 2019 analysis of academic research into the effectiveness of feedback on energy consumption behaviours indicates that being able to monitor your energy usage by installing a smart meter and having access to energy insights information can lead to a reduction in energy use. The reduction in energy use results from the customer making changes to their habits by curtailing home energy use through actions such as optimising heating settings or switching lights off. The actual savings achieved will vary depending on individual energy use and the nature of changes made to a customer's energy habits.

2 By switching to OVO Energy you could reduce your carbon footprint by up to 1 tonne of carbon per year. This is based on the carbon emissions caused in the production and consumption of the 100% renewable electricity OVO provides as standard, compared to the emissions caused by the production and consumption of UK grid average electricity. Average UK household energy consumption figures were sourced from BEIS (2019). The carbon emissions factors were calculated by the Carbon Trust.

3 To access some features and to get the best out of the tool, OVO members may need a smart meter installed (you can do that easily here), and for that smart meter to report data to us every half hour.  If you’re a current OVO member but don’t yet have a smart meter, or don’t have half-hourly reporting, you can also set that up by going into OVO Greenlight and following the instructions.

4 Based on analysis carried out by the Carbon Trust for OVO Group (2020), 28% of an average individual’s carbon footprint in the UK comes from energy. In this analysis, the carbon footprint includes the following lifestyle categories: energy, transport, shopping, food and drink and holidays. See table below for each category.  This carbon footprint data has been calculated using BEIS 2020 emission factors. This excludes emissions from things that the average person cannot directly control such as supporting the NHS, defence, government bodies, etc. Please note these figures are not reflective of potential changes to your habits during the coronavirus pandemic.
