Introducing OVO Drive Anytime: a unique EV energy plan that saves you money
26 January 2021 | Celia Topping
At OVO, we’re constantly looking for ways to help our members be more energy-efficient, cut their carbon footprint, and reduce their bills. For this reason, we’re proud to present our latest pioneering product – the OVO Drive Anytime energy plan. It's powered by our partner, the leading intelligent energy platform, Kaluza. And it’s currently the only “type of use” energy plan in the UK that offers electric vehicle (EV) owners a separate rate for their car and home.
Electric vehicles are a driving force in the global quest to reach net zero by 2050. This new plan helps our members go one step further towards a zero carbon future.
What is a "type of use" tariff?
Many EV owners may use "time of use" tariffs, such as Economy 7 or Economy 10, to charge their car during off-peak times. Unfortunately, this kind of tariff limits drivers to charging their car at certain times – often at night – if they want to benefit from the cheaper rate.
Our unique “type of use” tariff, on the other hand, focuses on one specific way the electricity is used, rather than the time it’s used. In this case, for charging your EV.
What are the benefits of the Drive Anytime plan?
Our innovative smart energy plan makes owning an EV even more attractive. It’s the UK’s only plan that separates the cost of charging an EV from your household electricity bill:
- OVO Members pay a guaranteed flat rate of 6p per kWh at any time of day for charging their car with their OVO smart charger.
- This means you can save as much as 63%1 – or £200 – on charging your car per year. It means you could be driving your car for less than 2p per mile2!
- Kaluza’s cutting-edge technology makes sure EV owners are protected from price spikes. It does this by shifting charging away from peak times, to capture the cheapest and greenest electricity on the market.
- OVO members always benefit from 100% green electricity3 to power their home and car.
Jessica Tan, Managing Director of OVO Smart Home says, “OVO Drive Anytime enables our EV driving members to charge their EVs on the lowest prices throughout the day, hassle free. No more worrying about high energy peak prices, or when to plug and unplug. Kaluza’s technology does all the hard work, and it’s good for the planet, too. We’re excited for our members to be shaping the future of energy with us.”
How does Drive Anytime work?
It’s simple. You’ll be charged at your normal rate for all your electricity. Then on the first day of the following month, you’ll receive a credit for the amount of electricity you used to charge your EV, charged at 6p per kWh. Here’s an example:
Bob uses 800 kWh in January. 300 kWh went to charging his EV, and 500 kWh went into his home.
OVO’s Drive Anytime rates are 6p per kWh for EV charging, and Bob was already paying 13p per kWh for his household electricity use.
So Bob’s bill will show £104 as the total (800 kWh at 13p per kWh), with an OVO Drive Anytime credit of £21 (300kWh at 6p per kWh). Which means Bob pays £83.
Not a bad deal, eh Bob?
Who is Kaluza?

Is the Drive Anytime energy plan available for everyone now?
At the moment, we’re in the initial phase of the Drive Anytime launch – and we’re testing the new energy plan with a small group of OVO members. We expect this phase to be successfully completed by summer. This means OVO members can look forward to getting involved in the full nationwide rollout by the end of Autumn.
To be eligible to sign up for Drive Anytime, you must be using an OVO smart charger to charge your EV. If you don’t have one, it’s easy to get one installed. And OVO are offering a £70 discount on top of the government’s OLEV grant towards your very own smart charger.

1 Average unit price in the market (among the top ten suppliers) is 16p per kWh, based on the London region. The OVO Drive Anytime plan guarantees 6p per kWh for car charging. Assuming an EV uses 2000kWh per year charging at home, this equates to £120 on OVO’s Drive Anytime preferential rate and £320 on a regular tariff – a 63% saving.
2 The OVO Drive Anytime rate is 6p per kWh for EV charging. A Tesla Model 3 does 240Wh per mile, or 4.17 miles per kWh. A Model 3 driver could therefore charge on the OVO Drive Anytime tariff for 1.44p per mile.
