Is a smart thermostat right for me?

If you’d like to be the boss of your heating and reduce your bills1 without changing the comfort of your home – then the answer is yes!

How do smart thermostats work?

They connect your heating system to the internet, allowing you to control the temperature in your home from your smartphone. You can even change the temperature if you’re not at home – like if you forgot to turn the heating off before you went on holiday.

You can easily turn your heating up or down, or set a daily schedule in the tado° app. The Internet Bridge (connected to the internet via the router) transmits this info wirelessly to your Smart Thermostat. Clever, right?

Who can get a tado° Smart Thermostat?

As we’re in beta testing you’ll have to :

  • Be an OVO member, on any dual fuel monthly plan
  • Have an internet connection
  • Have an existing thermostat within your home
  • Have your online My OVO energy account set up (this is where you’ll get your personalised hints and tips)
  • Have a smart meter already installed.
Is this open to all of the UK?

As we’re in BETA testing, we’re focusing on certain areas. In order to be eligible you’ll need to live in one of the following postcode areas:

BA, BD, BS, CF, DH, DL, EX, HU, KA, LS, M, NP, OL, PL, PO (excluding Isle of Wight), SA, SO, TA, YO

What do I actually get?

You’ll get your hands on a tado° Starter Kit: Wireless Smart Thermostat V3+. It has everything you need to fully control the heating in your home, from anywhere.

What does the installation involve?

One of our engineers will fit your thermostat on your chosen date, getting you up and running.

Here’s how it works:

  1. The engineer sets things up so that your tadoº can ‘talk’ to the tadoº app
  2. They then link up the wireless temperature sensor, and take away your old thermostat
  3. Lastly, they set up the receiver so it can tell your boiler when to turn on or off – based on the temperature

The engineer then tests the system and checks if everything is working. You’ll just have to link your tadoº account to your My OVO account, to get those personalised hints and tips.

Is there anything I need to do before I get my smart thermostat installed?

Before your installation appointment, we really recommend downloading the tado° app and creating a tado° account. You can get the app for iOS or Android – tado° terms apply.

How do I connect my smart thermostat to My OVO account?

Once your thermostat is installed, log in to your My OVO account and link your tadoº account. Under smart devices on the left hand menu, you’ll see a smart thermostat option. When you click it, there’ll be a button to link your tadoº.

What’s the benefit of buying a smart thermostat from OVO?

The main benefit of getting your smart thermostat through us is that you’ll be able to connect it to your My OVO account. We can then show you how you personalised insights on how you use your heating, and suggest ways you can lower your carbon footprint, and save money on your bills. And we’re the one energy supplier doing this right now. Plus we install it for you too!

What do I do, if I have any issues with my smart thermostat?

Do I get a warranty for my smart thermostat?

The tadoº thermostats come with a 2 year warranty from the manufacturer. For more information about the specific product warranty, head to their terms and take a look at section 13, here.

What if I leave OVO early?

If you want to leave us before the 12 month period, no worries. We’ll just add the remaining cost of the tadoº to your final bill.

1 An independent study has shown that installing and correctly using a Tado smart thermostat can reduce your energy use from heating by up to 31%. The study found that the Tado device can reduce heating energy requirements by 14-26% through intelligent control of the heat source (e.g. boiler or heat pump). A potential further saving of up to 7% could be achieved by turning down the heating based on the weather forecast, depending on the window sizes. If the window surfaces are relatively large, the energy saving will increase accordingly. The study can be found here.
