How to get a smart meter

There are just 3 simple steps to getting your smart meter:

  1. Book an appointment

The best way to book is via your online account. Simply log in and select an appointment time and date that’s available.

  1. Check your email confirmation 

Once you’ve booked, we’ll confirm those all-important details by email. Nearer the time, we’ll also send you a couple of appointment reminders too. 

  1. Get ready!

Before your appointment, don’t forget to...

  • Check that someone over the age of 18 will be home for the whole installation visit
  • Clear the area around your meters for easy access
  • Make sure that any meter keys you need are handy
  • Keep an eye on your phone – our engineer will text or call before they arrive

During your appointment...

  • We’ll switch off your energy supply for around 20 minutes. If you have any medical equipment that needs powering, please tell our engineer as soon as they arrive.
  • We’ll explain how your meter and In-Home Display (IHD) work, give you some energy-saving tips, and offer you a handy guide to read
  • Put any furry friends in a separate room
     

About your smart meter installation

Our smart meters generally take about 60 minutes to install for one meter, or 90 minutes for both gas and electricity – depending on the age and type of your current meters and their set up. 

We’ll need to switch off both your electricity and gas for about 20 minutes each.

While installation is free, there may be an extra charge if your existing meters, your wiring, or any gas leaks need fixing beforehand. We’ll let you know if that’s the case before we carry out the work.

Before and after installation, we’ll test to check that everything is working correctly.

Once installation is complete, we’ll leave you some useful information on energy efficiency best practice and some other helpful energy-saving tips.

Do I have to be a member to get a smart meter with OVO?

Yes, you need to be an OVO member before booking an appointment with us. Click here to join us. 

 

Will the installation cost me anything?

Your installation is free, but if existing meters, faulty wiring, or gas leaks need fixing before we can safely fit your smart meters, there may be a charge. But we’ll let you know about any charges before we carry out the work.

 

How safe are smart meters?

Smart meters have been rigorously tested for safety. They’ve passed all the UK and EU regulations that make sure a product is safe. All the same regulations that your phone, microwave, and TV will have had to pass too.

 

What data does OVO get from my smart meter and why?

Your smart meter automatically sends us readings. This means your bills are accurate and we can tell quickly if there’s any interruption to your energy supply. We can check the info from your smart meter, and use it to:

  • Manage your energy supply, and spot any problems as soon as they happen
  • Give you relevant advice to help you reduce your energy use and lower your bills
  • Improve our service for you and other members
  • Develop and manage energy supply and demand

If we need to use the information for anything else, we’ll get in touch to talk it through with you and explain why. 

 

How does OVO protect my smart meter data?

Smart meters are super secure. We use safety measures agreed with the government (like encryption) to make sure that any data your smart meter shares with us is always safe and private. We also follow strict rules set out by the industry regulator, Ofgem, and all your personal data is safeguarded by the Data Protection Act too.

Smart meters don't use the internet and have their own closed communications system. It's been designed with top cybersecurity experts, including the government's security and intelligence organisation, GCHQ. This means your data can't be seen by anyone but you and us.
